So my thermostat stuck the other morning and i drove... who knows how long while over heating the car i was half asleep and never noticed it happened until it was too late now i have a blown head gasket. Im wondering if anyone could give me a idea of how much damage i may have caused based on this. I started the car today after i got home from work "had it towed home from the day before" i let it run for about 10 minutes and it leaked about a quart of oil and some antifreeze from between the head and block. I'm just trying to get an idea of how much damage i am looking at i know you can't say for certain without seeing it for yourself.

well if its just the head gasket and if you do it youself you would probably be looking at from 70 to 150 depend on the brand. Also do a coolant and oil flash the price on that depends on the productas you use.
Now there could possibly be some more complications from this problem. There is many things that can go wrong: warped head, melted piston, droped valve seat, piston ring collapse etc... if You got it hot enough and drove long enough all of the following can happen and that is not cheap.

First try to listen if the car has any knocking or slaping noises, if yes than you most likely will have an internal engine damage. What you have to do is take everything apart measure the head for warpage, look at the valve and the valve seats to see if they turned blue or fell. Check the cylinder bore and look if there is any signs of piston damaging the cylinder walls, like long scatch marks etc, also see if the piston is ok.

But if your car starts and dosent knock or anything it shouldnt be that serious.

Cracked head (for sure)
Blown rings.

Your joking, right?

The head might be warped. Take the head off, take it to a machine shop and have it planed. While the head is off, just make sure the cylinders aren't scored and get a new headgasket.

With an overhead cam engine you really want to straighten the head and not just re-surface it. The reason is that the head being warped will put the cam bores out of line and will cause excessive wear and can cause the cam to seize in the head. It will also make the combustion chambers vary in volume. Resurfacing should only be done to freshen up the surface.

It won't just be the HG.

My question to the OP is, why would you...

let it run for about 10 minutes and it leaked about a quart of oil and some antifreeze from between the head and block

While you were standing there watching it pour a quart of oil out of the head for 10 minutes, coolant and oil were probably mixing and circulating through your bearings... among other things.

Here's a bit more information for you guys... compression results 4: 170 3: 150 2: 155 1: 155. I've never heard of a blown head gasket having compression numbers like that and the leak is at the 4th cylinder closest to the front of the block. while its running there is a small ticking sound almost like injectors.

It won't just be the HG.

Didn't know it was leaking it is was already dark i didn't notice until i checked the oil level after letting it reach operating temperature and it was a quart low so i checked under the car and found a puddle of oil / antifreeze looked around with a flash light and found where it was coming from and shut it down.

If those numbers are accurate (which I would be curious about, especially since you are hearing what appears to be a combustion leak), it just means that you didn't burn through a fire ring on the HG. There are a lot of ways a head gasket can fail.

Ahhh... well, lesson learned. Next time let it run for only 30 seconds or a minute, then shut it down and look for any leaks. :)

i think that you compression tester is defecting, or maybe its just the gasket got blown between the water jackets. Do you have any white or blue smoke coming from the exhaust? is the oil a milky color?

when i checked the oil it was barely touching the dipstick so i couldn't really tell if it had water in it. with it being as cold as it is i can't tell if it was smoking or just the exhaust being hotter than the air.

I did not know that could happen Calan, Thanks.

Whatever it is, you allready know that you have to take the head of so good luck hope your car will run good when its all done.

Yeah but the first step is getting my gst back running properly so i can have a way back and forth to work second is to find out the cost of damage i let happen to the gsx and decide whether or not i should go ahead and do a 6 bolt swap. Thanks for all your input guys I'm sure before all is said and done you will here from me again.

It will cost you at least a thousand dollars less to just fix the head gasket issue.

I agree with vladimir because my gst haas a blown HG and was blowing white smoke out of the exhaust but my compression test came back something like 165,155,165,155. So ya and It shouldnt be bad if you can do or know someone who can change the HG for ya.
