You cannot get everything out. Here is the Vc that made me decided o start doing powder coating and also make my aluminum vc baffles for my valve cover. I order it off ebay and whoever did the coating failed to mask before blasting and filled the baffles with sand. I spent about 1 hr cleaning with simple green and by the end the water was running clear. I was pretty sure I had cleaned it pretty well. Even then I still could not bring myself to put it on my car so I decided to pull the baffle out.

Here is what was left behind.

Wow. I had been following this thread thinking it might not be such a bad idea. But I think the pictures speak for themselves when it comes to this. Ill definitely be doing it right and getting the aluminum replacement baffles and welding them in.

Just wondering - is there a need for baffles at all if you're going to enlarge the existing holes (for the PCV and breather nipple near the CAS)? It doesn't seem like the cams would be tossing oil at those spots - well maybe the PCV hole.

I recently did the same thing. I knew I would be removing the baffles, but I tried to clean it out anyways. I tried every method to clean it, and when I removed the baffles....it was like I didn't clean anything at all.

I picked up an aluminum baffle kit from "GreenGoblin" after welding two -8an fittings to the top of my valve cover. I had a local shop tack it on for me and its good to go.

Chris, I have never tried it, but I can imagine that it would push alot of oil into your catch can. Probably not a good idea for a road racing or auto cross car. I don't think I've dumped my catch can out even once this year with baffles.

I remember at least one person in the past that had ran his VC with no baffling, and his catch can filled up very quickly. I'll see if I can find that thread.

Where can one buy said aluminum baffle? Or do I have to make one?

I don't run baffles in mine and don't loose but a pint of oil if that for 1500 miles in my catch can

From what I've seen, you absolutely need some type of baffling around the fittings for the best results. Besides splash, oil also finds it's way into the lines by creeping up the walls of the VC; especially around the PCV valve opening (thus the reason for the snorkel tube on a factory PCV valve). The baffles help block this and provide another surface for oil to collect on and drip back down into the engine.

I also believe that the baffles help form a relatively calm "pocket" for crankcase gases to collect in. Without the baffles, air is constantly being churned and mixed with the oil due to all the valve train action, making it harder to purge off crankcase gases. This is just a semi-informed working theory though. :)

On a related topic - Kevin, did you ever get geared up for producing the replacement baffles? (This may be a tricky question to answer here; PM me if you'd like.)
