Hey guys, Im looking to get a talon tsi awd for just a car to have fun with, fix and just have as a project car. But I dont want to spend the money to register it because I will be at college most of the time and wont reallt be driving it. So are your project cars or dsm's registered? What could I do in my position? I live in NY. Thanks.

All depends if you are going to drive it on the street, if so than definitely register it. IF not than it doesn't need to be.

Mine has been in the shop for the last 2 months registered and insured. If you are going to be taking it on the road then register it. If it is a track only car you should be alright.

You really needed to come on a forum to tell us you wanted to have ''fun'' with it ? If you drive your car on the street you have to register and insure it. If you live in an apartment you have to register it any where where it is not private property it is supposed to be registered and insured.

Some states require you to register it even if its sitting in the driveway. If its inside there is much they can do about it.

No not ''states'' some COUNTIES depending on the city don't allow that and enforce this by cities code enforcement (ppl in charge of neighborhoods) .

Pretty much if they CANNOT see it they cannot do anything about it. (garage)

Title it at least...otherwise good luck with selling it...ALSO if you cant afford to title it, perhaps buying a car to modify isn't really in the big picture for you

Bro its like 50 bucks give or take to register your car. If you cant spend that, then dont start modding. Put your focus into school for now.

really? i thought these were more expensive then that. also i this may be a dumb question but do i need insurance on this car if i register it?

i live across the river from you. i would check with the local town to see what the regs are. in poughkeepsie you cannot have a car on your property that is unregistered if it is visible from the street and it must be behind a fence.

plus when you register it you pay x amount based on the sale price or the blue book price of the car if they feel the sale price is grossly undervalued. nys isnt stupid and knew people were putting they got a car for 50 bucks to get around it.

I brought picks to show mine as a project car and a letter stating its condition and it cost me about 200 bucks to register but dutchess county chargers extra for the stupid mta crap.

The thing about insurance: if anything were to happen to the car while its sitting... (like if it was stolen, storm damage, ect) then it might be worth at least having some kind of insurance on it to cover it. On the flip side, if you don't have alot of money invested in it and don't really care, then you don't need it.

But yeah, every area is different, so check with your local laws regarding cars and registration.

Alright thanks guys and yeah I know not to put 50 bucks for a car, the one im looking at it about 2500 so I was thinking, aybe 500 or 750?

Definently register it. Everytime ive been in to register a vehicle they want proof of insurance. You can put the lostest amount of insurance on and its not more than maybe 65 or 80 a month depending on where you live.

To actually register it, they will likely need insurance, property tax receipt, valid safety inspection, and emission testing (if applicable in your area). You will also have to pay your sales tax on the car before it is registered.

Another thing to consider is if the car is on your properly, your property insurance might cover any damages or losses. I drop my car insurance every winter, but it's still covered by my home owners insurance.

I don't renew my tags if I don't drive the car either. There's no point in throwing away money.

Wow man, your DMV sucks!! We just take our title in and give them money and they print us a title.. No emissions, no inspections no junk like that..

Anywho, OP you definitely should title the car. Maybe register it as a non-op.. I think that is cheaper.. Dont quote me.

I have a collector plates on mine...onetime fee...can't drive it in January, February, or March though...:hellyeah:

In my town even if a car is in your garage it's technically not legal..It has to be registered..But that is kinda stupid to me cause what if the person is restoring a car in the garage..You mean to tell me that the person needs to pay an extra 75$ a year even tho the car is not driven on the strret?

But yes My car is registered, just not insured, or drivin..

Like stated everywhere is different.

But remember there is ALWAYS a way around stuff:thumb:

Things I do here.... First if the title is from out of state, then the vehicle is required to pass state emissions testing. So I take the title in and get a "title only transfer" no registration. And you can say i'm not registering it because it threw a rod out the block and the mechanic may or may not be able to fix it, and if he does it'll take a while. Then go back 2 weeks later and register it, and since it is no longer an out of state title it doesn't need to pass emissions testing. And it can be registered without insurance because some insurance agents won't insure a car that has not been registered (they can, but won't...just looks fishy to them) and the DMV or MVD (same thing) also has a de-insured form you can fill out. If a car is broke and you are too, then you just fill out a form letting them know it's not on the road, not driving, not insured, etc... They also like for you to tell them if the car is out of state too. I was in there recently and added the #2 95 gsx to the list and got to the story of where it's in Idaho (i'm in AZ) and the lady said..."well that's information we like to know, i'll save you from the form and just make a note here on it" That car hasn't been registered since 2007 and haven't had any problems.

I've had a few cars, and just simply go into the dmv and let them know what's going on. It's easier than most people think to deal with them, it's just getting to them waiting in line forever that sucks LOL.

I had an 84 300zx and got it registered/insured, then the intake manifold started leaking coolant, so i spent a few months playing with it and dropped the insurance and didn't worry about the registration. Well I got a letter in the mail stating that the MVD had noticed that there was no insurance on the vehicle, and if i didn't respond to the letter they would suspend the registration, so I went in and said there's no insurance because the car's not on the road and it's not worth enough for me to keep insurance on it, so they made me fill out the de-insured form and it was that easy.

On another thought here, there's a way around the fee's and tax's for the amount it was bought for. There was a lady in oregon a few years back who sold a lambo gallardo for $1.00 once. Her husband ran off with another lady and wrote the first woman and said "please sell my car and send me the money" Retarded I know... but sadly true. Haha

Anyways, you can tell the dmv that you "traded cars" or "traded something of value for the vehicle with only $50 cash" or anything similar.
