Guy I got a question. I have a 90 Talon with all 91 up Driveline. I have the right shifter and the brackets on the 91 Transmission. Problem is that the side-to-side shift cable is too short. I mean it reaches but you have to run the adjustment so far out it just hangs on by the last 2 threads.

I am not sure if the cable are 90 or 91. What would I need to do in this situation?

You could try picking up some 91 cables and hope that the person that put the transmission in swaped the 90 arm for the 91 by pressing out the pin in the arm. Otherwise I see you pulling your transmission soon, I am pretty sure with a 91+ transmission swap to a 90 you HAVE TO REPLACE EVERYTHING.

i also have a 90. my shifter cables snapped i couldn't find any replacement cables so i bought 91+ shifter cables they were too short but would also fit if i adjusted the linkage all the way out, in the end i had to replace my shifter assembly to a 91 and i still have my 90 tranny. good luck!

Mine already has a 91 shifter, 91 trans and a 91 bracket on the trans. not sure whats wrong.

Did you put 91+ shifter cables in? Did you also use the 91+ arm that is bolted on along with the 91+ cable bracket on the transmission? I am guessing since you are not sure if the cables are 90 or 91 that is your problem, get some 91+ cables and see if that fixes it.

My buddy did the shifter and I verified it to be a 91 shifter. The trans is a 91 so I assume the 91 arm that came on it is probably on it.

The shift cables are an unknown variable that neither my buddy or myself know.

Now the arm you are talking about, that would be the arm that moves up and down on the right side closest to the motor correct?

Read above post but I am guessing you need 91+ shifter cables. Read this as well http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/dri...rackets-diff-between-90-91-dsm-vr4-trans.html

Well if there is no difference in the 90 to 91 shifter cables then that would rule the cables out.

So to put a 91 trans in a 90 you need the 91 trans, 91 shifter base, 91 trans bracket and the 91 shift arm which since the trans is a 91 it should already have it on it.
I am going to have to do some more research on this issue to see if I can find out more info.

Just read this over on the Vfaq.

If you put a 91-up tranny into a 90 car, you'll need to use the 90 mounting bracket, or the tranny will only go into 3/4/5/R, 1/2 won't be accessible. Conversely, if you use a 90 tranny in a 91-94 TEL or GVR4 without swapping the brackets, 1/2/3/4 will work, but you won't be able to access 5/R.

So I need to take the mounting bracket off the trans and swap it to a 90 bracket.

Everything needs to be off a 91, don't ues any 90 parts. And there is a difference between a 90 shifter cable and a 91+/vr4 shifter cable. Read the link I posted because one 90 cable is actually shorter then 1 91+ cable and that is the cable you are having problems with guaranteed.

The last picture is of the cables sitting next to eachother. The top ones are from the VR4, the second set down, are from a 1991 and up DSM, and the third set down are from a 1990 DSM. The VR4, and 1991 and up DSM are the same. The difference in length between the 1990, and the vr4/91 up, is roughly 1 3/8 of an inch on only one of the cables. The other cable is the same length.

Back at this stupid shifter cable problem.

Here are some things that I know and verified.

90 body
91 trans
91 cables
91 shifter base.

Still cannot engage 1/2 without adjusting the cable to the end of its travel.

I am not sure what to do here, Would 90 cables work?

There is nothing wrong with the trans. I have even tried using the 90 bracket on the trans like the VFAQ says but it will still not work.

I personally know the cables and the shifter are from a 91 as I just spent 50 bucks this morning pulling them off a junkyard car this morning.

can you take a chunk of all-thread and a coupler and put it on the end of the adjuster and gain a bunch more adjustment? this is kind of an educated guess, i've not been into the shifter on a dsm, but i've had to do similar things on other tranny swaps i've done.

if worse comes to worse find a custom cruiser or Harley shop near you and take your cable in and tell them what you need. they will make you a custom cable in whatever length with whatever ends you want. they may even make you a deal on some hot pink sheathing, or some other color that doesn't sell well. since it will be hidden in your case.

At this point it is the only option left that I can think of.
