what is this gear?- it goes into my timing belt and seems to want to come out when i remove the main drive pully- is this supposed to occur? its seems to be attached somewhere. i have pulled the main bolt and the four front bolts holding the pully onto the front of the motor. the pully just wont pull off without pulling this gear out. am i doing something wrong? am i missing something?

That is your crankshaft sprocket. You only want to pull the 4 small bolts off the pulley and not the big center bolt. Put the big bolt back in and tighten it up. Then your pulley will come off without the crankshaft sprocket.

What are you taking this stuff off for? Replacing the timing belt or what? Here is some good info Timing Belt VFAQ

only the outer ring is coming off- how does the center of the pully come off if the outer ring comes off with the puller?

you have to take the center bolt off to take the pully off. i broke the pulling doing what you said. theres a spring pin that was holding it on after i took the center bolt out. with the bolt out it took me 30 sec to get off. thanks for the advice.

You don't have to take the center bolt out. If you but a puller on it and only the outer part of the pulley started coming off your going to have to get a new one. try tapping on it to free up.
