OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I run a shop, I have 13 years experience rooted in Mitsubishi cars.

I'm just saying the most common things I see.

The cars don't typically run just slightly over temp, they either overheat or run normal.

You need to establish a base here, maybe drive until the cars gets up to temp, then unplug the cooling fans on purpose and monitor the gauges to see if they go up together or if one acts strange.

Not much to cause high temps- radiator, not enough coolant in the system, thermostat, fans, water pump. Thats pretty much it.

Thanks for the input fellas. Sorry it took so long for me to reply, I was at work. How do I check to see if there is air in the system? I do see a sensor mounted right on top of the thermostat housing and it likes like sealent may have been used. I was thinking my thermostat could've been stuck open also....if so, is there away for me to open it manually some how? How difficult is the thermostat to replace? Thanks again guys.

The thermostat being stuck open wouldn't cause it to heat up more, just take longer to get there. I've ran without a thermostat at all before. You just burp it a few times to get the air out, but as long as there is coolant in the bottle and you don't have any holes in your lines it should burp its self. You should get an acurate way of seeing if you even are overheating before you worry about fixing it.

Welllllll.......new thermostat solved this problem LOL. Out with the old, in with the new and v'oala overheating issue solved . Thanks for the help guys.

Ok I have a really odd issue and was wondering if anyone has had this happen to them and found the solution.

When my car is idling, the temp gauge rests right in the center(normal) range not moving up or down at all. When I put the car into gear and the rpm starts to rise the gauge rises steadily to about 3/4. No matter how fast I go or what gear I am in the gauge reads at 3/4. As soon as i push in the clutch and the rpm drops to idle the gauge instantly falls back to the 1/2 mark.

Another thing I noticed is that when the car is overheating, my HUD glows REALLY bright. Like abnormally bright. And while I was driving today I noticed that the car was not overheating for a little while. And then the really bright HUD started again and my temp gauge shot up. This leads me to believe that it is some sort of electrical issue...

I checked the coolant and it is full and I just had the coolant flushed a couple weeks ago.

Any help of where I should start with this one would be appreciated...

It sounds like you might need a voltage regulator. My brother had the same problem . We got one of those put it on and he has not had a problem since

could also be a ground wire.

if it were a sensor do you think that would make the hud get brighter?

Maybe one of the sensors on the thermostat housing is bad

That's what I thought at first but it doesn't really explain the HUD...

could also be a ground wire.

Any ideas on which one? That could take forever to find... I have no experience with car wiring...

Another think I noticed is: if I engage the E-Brake while the car is running the HUD lights up the 'Brake' icon in bright red but also all the surrounding icons light up red as well.

Update:

After I was done driving for awhile I popped the hood to make sure everything still looked ok and I noticed my battery had practically exploded. The caps blew off and there was acid over everything. So I reattached the caps and after driving it a couple times and have not had the issue at all.

Hopefully it won't start happening again and the problem fixed itself... (probably not) But I will keep a close eye on the battery to make sure that it doesn't do that again. :idontknow:

Test your alternator and see how many volts is throwing.
It looks like your alternator regulator is off, If you don't fix the volt, it will do the same thing, and you have to change batteries so frequently, well, that's if it doesn't burn a wire or something else.

I will definitely check that, thanks.

technically your car isnt overheating. its just the electrical malfunctioning.

That is what I thought as well, but when I pulled over the first time and opened the hood steam came spewing out and it smelled like it was overheating. So I think it was legitimately overheated...

Update:

So the alternator wasn't working at all so I had my mechanic look at it. He's had it for 2 days and said that somehow the positive and negative connected and blew up the battery. He thinks that the alternator died after the battery exploded, not that the battery exploded because of the alternator overcharging. But he said that he didn't really know if that was the case or not. So I'm out $500 for a new battery and alternator. He said he would install them and try to make sure that there isn't some kind of a short somewhere else that could have caused it.

Any other ideas of what to check for? Or do we have it covered?

Make sure the harness that runs along the bottom of the front of the car hasn't been damaged, I bought a gsx to rebuild and kept having this similar issues...the whole harness had to be replaced as it was damaged and the wires were crossed causing them to mess up everything and the wiring melt.

Does anyone happen to have a picture of where that happens to be? My car is at the shop and I can't go look for it right now, but I would at least like to know so when I am there it is easily identifiable.

Hi, im new to DSM i just bought my first eclipse 95 GS last weekend. I got it for 1600 so obviously it comes with problems.

The eclipse overheats after being driven not far. after only a few miles of driving the headers get so hot if you spit it will evaporate instantly. (someone please tell me how to turn my fan on all the time)

also there is an oil leak. its pretty big i just put 1qrt in and its already gone. NEED HELP! maybe the oil leak has to do with the overheating?

please if u can also give me a price range . ty!!

I would check and make sure the fan relays are good, and make sure there are no blown fuses. Can you see any leaks of oil on the driveway?

yeah theres plenty of oil on the drive way. the fan does work though, on idle it kicks on for about a minute then kicks off every now and then but when my car is so hot the headers could burn leafs they arent on...

First, is the engine over heating by what the temp gauge says?
Or is it the underhood temp is too high beacuse of the header?

The fans cycling will have nothing to do on how hot the header gets.

Next, have you looked and seen where the oil is leaking from?

Do you have a wideband O2 installed? If yes what are the readings?

Blindboarder.. how did you get "head gasket"? Did you even read and understand what the OP posted? He seems ( to me ) to be talking about a overly hot underhood temps due to a header that will burn leaves, and evaperate spit.
