Hey everyone,

So unfortunately my dreams of rebuilding my 1999 GSX are diminishing due to lost interest on the local votech's part and I am facing a tough decision.

I can either strip the car down, selling off non-essentials to get some money (factory turbo, interior, exhaust, etc.) and keeping it as a future project car. I dreamed of having it as a car to rebuild and give to my first son. I am the second owner and acquired it in January 2007 with 48,000 miles and it now has 110,000 miles. The only problem the car has is that the trans end case cover has a gash in it caused by the bearing in the trans failing resulting in the end nut to grind into the case cover. I bought it bone stock, and that is how it stayed since I owned it.

My other option is to sell this DSM and hope someday I can find another non-molested DSM to have as a project. The money from the sale would go towards buying my wife her first car. This was however my first car (at least first one that I paid for with my money, past my POS Protege and hand-me-down Jetta) and I wanted to keep it always.

Please give me your opinions as I would greatly appretiate all of yours feedback.

Thank you,
Tim

If you sell it, sell it to someone who you feel will take good care of it.

Also, I cringe when I see partouts of cars that are in good shape. These cars are getting harder and harder to find, especially ones that haven't been molested by some jack off.

Edit: If you have a place to store it, I say keep it. Unless of course you REALLY need the money.

I do not think parting it out is going to bring much revenue for you, especially since it is mostly stock parts, and if you take a look at the classifieds, you will see it is flooded with stock parts, and the demand is on aftermarket performance. A 2nd gen GSX, even with the transmission issue, as a whole car should fetch a good price. I'd sell the whole thing, save, and start back in again in the future.

It's becoming increasingly rare to find these cars in decent condition. I would say keep it. I regret selling every one of my DSMs.

I'm not sure how your financial situation is and of course there are priorities that need to be put first before material objects. That being said if you were able to keep the car, without selling parts off it, I think would be your best case scenario. I currently am doing the family thing with a wife, kids, and bills. I pulled my car off insurance, to save some money there, and its slowly being put back together. It's probably been around three months so far to get my head rebuilt and I still need to order all my timing belt components. I'm just taking the no rush approach and when I get the spare money after bills it goes towards restoring the car. You need to take care of the important things first and foremost than decide from there. Of course there will always be other cars around but they are getting harder to find and even harder to find in good condition.

Ditto this 1000 times over.

Taht being said, OP, if you are looking to sell, PM me, im looking to buy and you are pretty close.

hang on to it. I bought my 98 spyder new off the lot. swapped it to awd in 2000 and it was taken apart in 2001. It has been sitting all apart since. I had it for sale a few times but could not come to give it away for what people were offing for it. In the last month I took the car cover off of it and started working on putting it back together after the 10 years of sitting. I just was tired of it and did not want to touch it for years.

Just let it sit if you have room and move on to other projects for now and you will come back to it some time. When I let the spyder sit. I built 6 other mitsu's now I just want it back running so I can have fun with it now since I sold all my other dsm's and just have mirages and a evo 3 and the spyder was sitting there and wanted to be fixed

I also am thinking of selling my 96 GSX or trading it for a reliable commuter. I had a turbo GS that I sold in order to get the GSX and have a blast driving it..unfortunatly it has been "molested" as you guys say and I did not really know what I was getting into when I got the car just a month ago.. I have began the maintenance but through the thread helps and searching these forums I have found that it has a G4CP swap...it has a ton of other aftermarket parts and I am afraid that when I start school in January (a 110 mile round trip three days a week) that I may have made a poor decision in chasing my want for a GSX.... Nevertheless.. this car is fast and fun and I do not want to get rid of it.. I wish I would of looked for a stock one as I am new to these cars and cars in general... So I am stuck with the thoughts now of WILL THIS SWEET CAR LEAVE ME STRANDED AT SOME POINT!! hmmm

Well after the trans took a crap, I bought my brother's 1993 Honda Accord and that has been a nice reliable DD for almost a year. We we're looking into leasing a BMW (my brother is a tech at the dealer so I get employee prices) but my credit sucks and my wife doesn't have her license yet. So the alternative is to save up for a newer DD, which we have $1500 but if I we're to sell, I could probably fetch a good down payment.

The parts I would sell would be the interior seats and panels as I am wanting to switch to black when I would put it on the road, the turbo which is in good condition, the exhaust which is also in good condition, so I might be able to get $800 off of that stuff.

It is a tougher decision then getting married :p

BMW's a nice car I had a 328i for a while the handling was great. Parts are a bit pricey but the quality is there, I also have a family member who's a BMW tech which was nice for parts or when I needed a more detailed computer reading than the OBDII port would give me. I'm finished with the whole buying new thing I really don't like having payments. You may be able to have your brother ask around for a bimmer if you wanted you can find some in good shape for under 3k if you look and wanted to go that route.

I agree with the tougher decision than getting married bit although it seems like they both cost the same amount.

I would say either keep it or sell it, dont start selling parts.

Like I said before, PM me a price, im back in the market for another dsm.

That is true! Haha

You really want my DSM huh?

Damn such a hard decision...

Well it is my baby and that is what is so difficult... Make a quick buck or wait it out...

Yea man don't sell it. I've been draging my spyder around now for eight years and i have yet to finish the motor let alone the tranny! so If your ok money wise with putting your dsm to the side for awhille than do it! Think about this, if you sell your dsm now and than later down the road you buy another one you will have to start over again on figuring out the issues it may have or the surprises you may get from the PO work. Than think about how well you know your own dsm, You know all the problems that are wrong, you know whats good about it also. Kinda of like starting over with a new girlfriend!=). As the saying goes "Sometimes it's cheaper to keep her!" Good luck with either route you take

I don't need the money though with needing a car for my wife and my debts, it would be a nice chunk of change to put towards both but I could still have enough money for that, it would just take more time...

Here's how I look at the whole 'part out' thing.

If I ever decide to get rid of my car, I'm gonna part it. I dont want ANYONE driving around in MY car. Whether or not you bought it from me, I did everything to that car...and now someone else is driving it. I couldn't live with that in the back of my mind. I'd rather give back to the community to as many people as possible with the parts, then sell the shell to someone who knows what they're doing and have the reassurance that they'll take care of it.

I wouldn't sell it till she ask you to thats if you are good on money. Its hard selling slot of people don't have money to spare . I have been trying to sell mine for awhile and its been a no go but I wouldn't sell it unless you have to.

Just keep it man. I would never sell any of mine but then again I've had mine for like 9 years now. I couldn't imagine some dude in my cars.

Well I have decided to keep it as of yesterday but then late last night, as I was making a left turn, someone ran a red light and hit my DD (1993 Honda Accord) head on and now I looking for another car.

If anyone knows anyone around Central NJ/Eastern PA, let me know.
