hey guys. i have a 97 gs-t and i have 153k on the engine and chassis. I'm so afraid to do anything performance wise on it because of the high miles on the stock engine. i currently have a short tam intake, a 3' catback exhaust, and an aftermarket bov. but that's all. and its just not enough power for me. is there anything i can do to increase performance while still being safe? i know my best bet would be to rebuild the engine or find another engine with lower miles, but I'm tight on money at the moment. once i finish school and get a better job money will be no problem. but for now, i just need a cheap easy way to get more power while still being safe. any thoughts?

thanks, christian

Something you will hear much on this forum: Good things aren't cheap and cheap things aren't good. So until you get some extra money to spend on your car, keep it as is for now, and save up for when things break...because being a DSM, you know there is bound to be something that will go at the most random time. Believe me, if your going to do something right, do it right the first time. It will last longer that way.

Agree with the above two posts. Maintenance is the BEST mod you can do.

Personally I think you should just verify that your car is in good mechanical condition. Check the drivetrain, axles, suspsension (including bushings). Check out the motor by doing a leakdown and/or compression test and boost leak test. Check for leaks or bad seals/gaskets. If all checks out, you can then start upgrading. Just make sure you don't cheap out or take short cuts!

cool thanks for the advice. im going to check into the mechanical condition of it a little more in depth. and if it all checks out then i might do a few small upgrades. but im not going to feel 100% safe until i have either a new engine or i rebuild this one. thanks guys

A good friend of mine once had a 6-bolt which was in three different cars and had, at best guess, around 280K on it. I believe there was around 150k on the car it was originally removed from, then used in two different cars for another 130k or so. At the time it was still running low-12's on a TD05H 20G at 22-25psi.

That being said, it's all in how the engine is/was maintained.

There's so many people now days pushing the stock block, many over 500whp already. If your maintenance is done you should be okay to start upgrading. New engines aren't the end all be all. A mbc, boost gauge, and fuel pump will net you some more HP. You'll want those anyway if you are determined to put in a new engine.

Yeah i just figure that this is my daily driver and i would be screwed if i blew it up. I'm saving up for a new engine that i can have off to the side to either build or have as a backup if I blow this one up! haha

Do your maintenance and you will be good. Maintenance is key to keeping a healthy running engine in any vehicle.

As stated before do all the maintenance on it and make sure everything is in good order. If you don't want to really mod it I would get DSMlink. I'm sure tuning what you already have will make a nice incrase.

Wow! lots of hope in this thread. I agree maintenance and care these engines last!

Save up and buy yourself a spare engine and build it, when you are ready do a one weekend swap so you have very little down time and some spare's as well.

Your good bro, my weekend warrior runs consistant 12.9's @ 25psi at the moment. Planning to beat that time by alot next season. You can see my mods in profile. I'm the third owner and have personally had the car for going on 14 years. I myself have put around 150,000+ miles on my dizzum. I'm about a month away for hitting 240,000 on stock motor, only mods done to it arp head studs and 3G lifters. Still on stock headgasket, body is still in very good shape. Never had motor out of car so far. All I can say is pm's and learn to know your car inside and out.

my motor as over 100,000 miles stock block running 11.9 with 30lbs of boost e85 and daily driven. I just made sure I have every supporting mod a good tune and to take care of the car. You should be fine as long as you take care of the car and don't just try and slap on a big turbo or ebay parts

A knockless tune, compression test, and boost leak test are about all you need. Just make sure the timing belt has been replaced (every 60k) and you have no leaks, etc.

My stock block lasted from 1995 to 2011...was ran at 23psi on a Big16G, and finally kicked the bucket at around 167k ONLY because I was an idiot and ran it low on oil and spun a rod bearing. The thing ran like an absolute champ until I killed with my carelessness.

That being said: relying on a modified DD is an exercise in frustration, humility, and late night wrenching. But do it anyway! :D

...and that was finally my 30th post, so I can rest on my post whoring for a bit! :hellyeah:

Maintenance is key!
But if you don't have the money or want to add anything substantial such as a turbo to your engine, start with the little things.
Examples;
Spark Plugs
Injectors
Headers (which can be quite a bit)
Change your clutch
Weight Reduction?

Or you can do operations to help the car in general such as,
Changing the backside brakes from drum to disc.
Going to a chain belt
Improving fluids
etc..

List goes on forever, but there are many minor and not so expensive things you can do to give yourself a tad boost or advantage.
