I picked up one of the Renault Clio electric pumps from Israel and a brand new rack. It was expensive, but should make for a kick-ass steering set-up. It's going to be exactly like gixxerdrew's PS set-up on his 2G.

Paul, you gonna do a write up on this conversion?
I'd like to keep power steering, but would love to eliminate the OEM pump, reservoir and lines, but keep the rack of course.

If decoder22 was on ebay he would get neutral feedback from me because they/he lied about when it was shipped out.

I ordered my de-powered powersteering rack from Midwest Street Performance who posts as decoder22 on august 30th 2010 , I was told that I would receive a tracking number in my email in the next day or 2 . I did not get an email so I called back on friday september 3rd and got the answering machine , I left a message. The shop called me back on Monday september 6th and told me they shipped it out last thursday or friday and just been to busy to send me any tracking information and told me I should get it during the week of september 6th-10th. I didnt receive any packages so I called them back on monday september 13th , they said they dont know why I have not got it yet and are digging thru their tracking numbers to figure out were my rack is. Well today is wednesday september 15th and I finally received my manual rack , and after running the tracking number I find out it was shipped from them on friday september 10th .

So overall I received the rack 17 days after I ordered it , and paid 230$ for it shipped to my door .

I went out tonight september 15th and installed it on the car , it is pretty straight forward on installing it , just unbolt the old bolt in the new. The car is in the middle of a 6 bolt swap so I have not got to drive on it yet , I'll post an update on how it feels after I get it back on the road in the next couple of days.

I'm very sorry about the shipping issue my office person told me he shipped it out already which explains why i couldn't find the correct tracking number I'm very sorry about this issue also i don't want you to think that i just put plugs in this rack feel free to disassemble the rack and see whats done to re insure that your money was spent on rebuilding and modifying the rack i also want to make it clear that i do not make any money on these racks sometimes i loose money with shipping and cores i try to help out as many people as i can if you do not like the rack or have a issue i will give u a full refund sorry for any trouble any of this might have caused you.

Update, after 2 yrs of having this rack installed and a combined 10 months of my car sitting due to deployment, my rack gave out. I THINK the splines stripped and if it would have happened out on the highway I would have probably caused an accident. Luckly, It happened leaving a parking lot and about halfway through the turn all the splines stripped and I couldn't steer the car at all. We had to manually turn the wheels by hand to move the car to the parking lot next to where I lost my steering.

Now, all I hear when I turn the steering wheel is metal on metal. I will be dropping the rack this weekend to see what actually happened and hopefully my steering column isnt f-ed too. We'll see...

Very good to hear you weren't on the road or in the middle of a pull when this happened. Post some pics when you pull the rack.

Mini Coopers and I believe the Cobalt SS/Ion Redline had Electric P.S. pumps.

Anyone know if the pulse on the ION/Slowbalt is the same as our pump? I've heard the MR-2 one is the same, but I actually have a bnib ION RL Pump. I was gonna replace it before I sold the car, but I am trading it this sunday and won't have time.

Thanks. After further investigation, thanks Kris and Corey, I found out that the bolt that clamps the steering column to the pinion had backed out and fallen off which cause me to lose all steering.

I now know the reason why it happened, too. When I did the rack swap and slid the pinion into the steering column I forgot to tighten the bolt down which cause about 2" of slop in the steering before the car actual started to turn. The car still steered just fine aside from that though. Over time the bolt must have backed out from me not tightening it down all the way and from the vibrations of the car. I feel like an idiot for not having done so but I'm glad nothing serious happened and that I got to keep some money in my pocket.

All I did to fix the issue was to line up the steering wheel with the wheels straight, I then used a long unused 12mm bolt that we found in my engine bay to tighten the column to the pinion. That's why our keep extra bolts in misc places ;)

I did a lock to lock test with the car standing still to test the steering. All was good and I then drove it home. I was paranoid the whole way but I'm sure with a few days of driving ill regain the trust of the steering once again. Everything is good...for now :)

few times it took longer than it should have due to few things happening between shop, race events, and my new born baby girl, moving etc to make this not happen again i built 2 racks today and boxed them up so they are ready to ship and can be shipped within 24-48 hrs guaranteed sorry for anyone that had to wait

Does anyone know if there's a way to use a 1g manual rack on a 2g? I have a 1 g rack here and would really like to try using it. Could the rack itself be modified to mount in the 2g points or could u possibly swap internals between them?

I'm done with the install but i'm too tired to post about it and I'm gonna get an alignment tomorrow if not Monday.

Then I'll drive it around some more and report back.

So far without an alignment the steering feels like shit and the car is extremely hard to turn even when going through the parking lot.
