great bend, Kansas
bought a 97 eclipse, brought it home wouldnt start afer that. found out that the head was warped. first i wanna know if i can put a diffrent style head an what mods for a possible build. i want my gs to b all motor just faster than normal. any suggestions? lookin for all answers
 
He is only getting 43 mpg. With consitant driving, and not being aggresive it is doable.

I can get 44 out of my SC1 1.9L SOHC without trying.

And if your friends 1.5l civic wasn't touching that I am sorry. Their epa MPG was 51... so he must really be dogging it, and it must really be a piece of shit. My grandma still has her 88 civic beater. Its gotten every scheduled service. She still takes it in for scheduled service and its got over 250k miles. It gets 50 around the city. 55-60 highway. Its really all about the way you drive. There are driving methods to increase MPG. Google it.
 
IF your not trying to spend on getting a turbo dsm i dont see the point in getting basic mods. Your still gonna get dogged by normal cars out there. So whats the point ? :D I mean at the track of course.
 
so i found a diffrent motor for the car.. im gunna jus swap it. i figured i may as well do that instead of tryin to bore it. Ricardo is your eclipse pretty fast i kinda want that setup with the pully setup mentioned by boost. i want my car to b little bit faster but still n/a

There's a slight rasp at 4k rpm (which coincidentally is the same rpm my intake starts growling). This rasp takes away from the intake sound a bit, so I'm trying to figure if this is normal or if there's some other problem. The intake still growls, it's just drowned out, so I'm not sure about all that. I think my resonator may be an issue, and/or I just need more flow on the intake side.

As far as whether or not it's fast? I believe it'll take my avenger pretty easily. The avenger is 160hp (cali spec), AT, has an underdrive pulley and CAI. There is definitely a nice difference between stock and the modifications I've put on, so I'd say go for it. I wouldn't go back.

As for gas mileage:

I haven't had a tank where I had consistent commuting. There is always something that prevents me from getting my best. 800 miles on a tank is very doable on my commute, but I do about 40% city driving and it kills my mileage. I can easily get 50+mpg on the hwy, but only 30's in the city. I'll put some more information regarding my driving techniques in my journal, I'll actually fill my car up today, and start a new thread regarding my daily mpg, and picture of my odo and you guys can figure out what's going on...

FTR, 900 miles on a tank isn't out of reach, and at some point, I might let you guys watch my SGII as I drive and you can watch the numbers go up as I drive. I'll probably do this AFTER I've logged daily incidences of a complete tank. One more thing. This still hasnt bested my best tank in my 2.5L V6 (mitsu motor) AT avenger at 44.1mpg over 736 miles. This was done on a 7 mile commute to work, with one highway trip of 149 miles at 55mpg round trip.

I've put 18.5gallons in the eclipse before, so this car should easily be able to get oil exec scary high numbers.

Everything I did to my GS when I first bought it has been removed and the car is back to near-stock aside from a custom-built muffler. Even the cold air intake I added gave no noticeable improvement in power and actually hurt the fuel mileage to the point where it came off in a short period of time. Just throwin' that out there.

I agree. My first car was a 97 RS. You can do all the bolt ons you want which are going to do little to none. You may get the feeling your car is faster because it will be louder but it wont be.

The best cheapest mod you can do to a n/a eclipse is spray it. I sprayed a 75 shot for 2 years with no problems. Best time was like 14.4@98 or so. Not fast by any means, but it was a lot better than stock.
 
so really doing throttle body, headers, cold air intake, an pullys etc wont help the acceleration at all? its hard to believe.


whats the diffrence between the rs an gs? could i spray with my gs? an how much would it cost to install spray?

I think it did on my Old Gs. But i have no way to actually prove that it made the car better.

The difference between a gs and an Rs is the Model.

Gs come with side skirts, electric windows, and sunroof, and some have leather seats. while the Rs doesn't. They also have different rims. Engine is the same 420a.
 
Should have bought a turbo dsm, or turbo your 420a then you will notice a difference.

..and if you still doubt, then I'll just have to give you a daily log (with pictures of my gauge and odo) of my trips for an entire tank. THEN call bs ;)

Are you getting that kind of gas mileage on a boosted 420a because mine is stock unfortunately and I don't get the best gas mileage
 
Its not necessarily about adding more horsepower all the time (in this case a 420a could always use more help) but its about where u put it. An open exhaust and intake would make more low end power so even tho your not adding more than 2a horsepower it has more pull ### you are putting more of the cars horsepower in the lower rpm's.
 
Ok, so i finally got my garage cleaned for my car. What is goin to b my main problems with switching motors. i recently got another 420a so i need to get my old motor out. an will there b any problems with the computer or will it reset?

,Im changing my motor b/c there is rest in the cylinder walls an one of my cams grinded small cuts into the head.
