I got a 91 Awd, Its daily driven and IM using a road surge shift box if that affects anything. I know there are other threads but im not sure if the shift box should affect the type of fluid I use.

i would look into the tci maxshift atf, thats what i use with my powerglides, th350's and th400 with transbrakes. i also rev the one to 9200rpm. never had a problem
edit: how big of an improvement over stock is the shiftbox? just curious being that you are all stock. i was looking into one for my auto

I run a mix of regular John Deere Hygard and Redline type F

I thought the hygard type stuff seemed really thick in my 1g auto -- the car could barely move until warmed up good, and if I let off the throttle it felt like I was slamming on the brakes.

kind of how Mine feels now before sit warms up.

Im unsure of improvment really. I got the car with a blown TCU and so I never got to expericne the car shifting normaly. The car been in limp mode for 3 years before I got it. I Enjoy using it. Its fun to control how you shift. Takes time to learn it though. If you dont shift iun the right RPM's expect a jerk, or atleast thats how mine is. And do you mean you hit 9.2k on a stock trans?

What about OEM Mitsu ATF?

I was looking at that to

I have an extremely loose stall, so I wanted it to tighten my trans up. The coldest it has been since the car became an auto is around 40-50 degrees, and the car drove fine.

I use hyguard, it's thick though.. It works well, temps stay low and it's cheap. I'm going to switch to redline type-f once I get my new converter in

How much of a mix are you doing ? 50/50 ?
Is your car a daily driver ?
I've been running Amsoil for about 5 years now.I've been thinking about adding some hyguard but I'm not sure how much so it doesn't effect my stall during brake boosting....

Up here in chicago our temps drop bad. Laster year we got to -40 with a windchill. So I dont think thick fluid is going to be good, and we have the 100+ degree weather in the summer to. Got to love the midwest.

Synthetic is always going to be better in the heat and it will remain a liquid in the cold- not look like a trans pan full of cherry Jello.

You can also get low-viscosity Hy-Gard fluid for winter.

stupid question, were do you buy this stuff from? i only see like quaker state and none of these at autopart stores by me.

It's roughly 50/50; my converter had Redline type F in it, and I filled the rest of the case up with the Hygard.

Car is not a daily driver; it has ~1100 miles on this combination right now with a lot of tuning/racing.

I can't tell you how much it actually changes your stall if you decide to flush and switch to this stuff. If you go through with this will you please document change in stall as well as top end efficiency?

I've been running Valvoline ATF+4 fully synthetic with about 3/4 of a bottle of lube guard black. Been beating the shit out of this stock auto (120k miles) trans in manumatic mode with full line pressure since March. I've got a restalled converter too and the fluid still looks clean and smells perfect. Trans shifts like a beast at WOT.

sounds the best for me, I try to not really beat mine tho LOL

Ive been using Redline High-Temp ATF, seems to be working pretty good but I havent tried anything else.

Never got around to looking at your response, no I was not shifting a stock trans at 9200, I was talking about a built th400 with a 6k stall

I run the amsoil fluid as well .I ran about 30 9sec passes on it last year and it still looked new and smelled fine when i tore everyting down.Just really expensive ,12.00 a quart and you need about 10 to fill when dry.

I saw valvoline(high miliage) at some autopart stores. Other than that they only carry quaker state and generic ATF. I was thinking of just getting OEM mitsu fluid, since thats what came with the car off the line.
