today i was changing my oil and i bought a new dipstick to replace my old/broken one. since it was down in the dipstick tube about 1-2 inches, i had to cut the tube to remove it and forgot to get a measurement to compensate for the lost length, can someone give me a measurement of how long their dipstick tube is from the block to the open part.

i didn't have time to play, i was an hour late for work, i will pick up a new one because i had to cut it, but if i can just compensate for it and not see any negatives (dont see why i would) then ill just leave it.

edit - i also tried to unbolt it, i took out the 12mm above the alternator but it wouldn't budge.

not spending $55 for a dipstick, i've already bought an universal adjustable one, i just need to know the length of the tube from block to opening.

why not measure what you cut. add that to your current length and bobs your uncle.

that should get you within a 1/16th to an 1/8th depending on the thickness of what you used to cut it. hopefully no shavings got in your oil.

it was a choppy cut using tin snips and pliers to bend it down then cut off the excess, so what i cut off, idk.

my oil was drained when i did it, like i said, it was in the middle of the oil change when i needed to get my dipstick out.

i'd rather not put in more oil than needed, and have a functional dipstick.

you may just have to cough up the money for a new OEM and call it a day.

no, i dont have to, my dipstick adjusts to different sizes, i just need to know the length of the dipstick tube, that's why i asked if someone would be nice enough to measure theirs for me from the top to where it meets the block.

Or you could just drain the oil, fill up with new oil (i put in 5 qt) then you'll know where its full on your new dipstick.

Just don't forget to start your engine so that the filter fills up, use a dremmel or hacksaw to mark full, use the measurement on the dipstick to figure your low oil mark and don't let any body change your oil. I don't know if I'd trust anybodys measurements :aha:

Its dark and raining so it was a quick measurement but should work. I went from the block to the bend then from the bend to the top which comes out to 12.5 inches. Hope this helps

thank you, i dont get off work till about 12 but ill go and do this tomorrow.

Using a standard tape measure, measuring from the underside of the dipstick with the concave of the tape measure against the tube it comes out to 13 1/4"m inches from the block to the top of the tube.

You going to get different numbers from different people. I would do like said above, put about 4q in start the car for a second so you get oil in the filter. Let it sit for a min or two mark that oil line as low oil line then add the other 1q start car let sit mark that as full line.

I can measure the tube (have a block in my garage with tube still intact) if I remember to later today :p or you can always do the fill it up way.

i'd rather do the measure and offset method. i've already added the oil to my car, i just need to adjust the stick, but i need a correct measurement, i've gotten 2 different answers already

you all seem to have a lack of understanding here. what im looking for is cheaper/easier/smarter/ect. in every aspect than just buying a new tube. i understand they're cheap yes, but there is absolutely no difference if someone would give me a correct measurement.

or it could take me $0 and 15 minutes to fix correctly. they both do the same thing.
