I don't trust books, or magazines for that matter, for anything other than proven science.
Any source of information that doesn't provide a forum for open debate is the devil.

That's cool.
Except certain people have different ideas on how to best achieve what.
If Shep wrote a book on how to build a trans, well I wouldn't read it because I don't like reading.
BUT just because the book says it's the best way doesn't make it so.

Having said that, I have not read this book - and I won't - because as I said, mediums that allow open debate of stated ideas are far superior.

That and I'm a super genius lyrical wordsmith voice of a generation.

Edit: Not only that, but the book was published 2 years ago, how much have we learned in the last 2 years?
Double Edit for those of you that may complain about supporting DSM vendors: I do, I buy from RRE.

that you are!
It's not really a how to book, even though it says so. It is more of a how this engine works book. He didn't recommend any parts or say build it this way. It really was a well written book that explained a lot of things I was not aware of concerning turbo engines...

In that case I support this thread.
I'm all about reading how things work books.
Just don't tell me how to build it.
And don't tell me what causes crankwalk other than witchcraft.

I can't believe this thread was created 2 years ago and I just found it today.
The reviews on Amazon for this book are great. I can't wait to read the history section.

I'm definitely going to buy it. :thumb:

This book is easily the best of the few DSM books out there and worth the $20 or whatever it was. Why not show support for someone actually going to that much effort for our cars. It's well put together and an interesting read.

I got it for much less than $20. I think I spent $4 including shipping on a used book from amazon. And the book was in almost new condition when it arrived. I thought it was a very informative read. Especially found the different formulas to be quite interesting and usefull.

Its a alright book. I use it for when i go to mr. toilet not bad reading material...

4g63 running good like it should....

I think it is a great book. When I picked up my first DSM, in parts and pieces, a friend gave me this book. It was a great place to start, very informative.

I've got this book myself. There are quite a few things in there that I already knew, but quite a few I wasn't totally aware of, so it was all in all a good purchase for me. I bought it out of curiosity, and wasn't disappointed.

If you are into tuning or just want a better idea of how engine managment works in general, these are great reads. Weather you have ECMlink, AEM, Haltech, Ostrich or a plain old datalogger, these will help you greatly. These should be a must before doing any tuning with our cars. This author Greg Banish is a very smart guy and the reviews for these books are wonderful. Covers everything from timing maps, to Speed Density, to VE tables..You will not look at your engine the same.

Check them out. The author is Greg Banish. Scroll down his page.

Amazon.com: Greg Banish: Books, Biography, Blog, Audiobooks, Kindle

Another great book is written by Matt Cramer and Jerry Hoffman..
Great reviews on this also. Some even think this book is better than the two above.

Amazon.com: Performance Fuel Injection Systems HP1557: How to Design, Build, Modify, and Tune EFI and ECU Systems. Covers Components, Sensors, Fuel and Ignition Requirements, Tuning the Stock ECU, Piggybac (9781557885579): Matt Cramer, Jerry Hoffmann

Hi i see people are still writing on this post from time to time and i was wondering for those who actually own the book. Does it go into detail on 2.3 stroker builds? Just wondering before i buy it

no, this book is more of an IDEA book. It doesn't say, you need these pistons, this crank, these rods, this turbo and these injectors to make this power. What it does is take your overall knowledge of engines to the next level. It teaches you how to read your turbo map, how to calculate piston speed (which is directly affected by "stroking"), and how to calculate VE and fuel injector size. It more teaches you how to make your won decisions, rather than just doing what you have seen done.

Not a problem... I bought the book when I got my Talon because this is my first DSM. I expected to find it telling me to use parts A for this horsepower and parts B for this horsepower. What I got was a lesson in turbocharged engines that went beyond any of my previos formal training. It will make you a well informed shopper and engine builder.

I bought this book about a year back. And all though this site may have all the info you need, it is nice to have a hard copy of something. And reading a book is much more entertaining to me then reading 20 page threads! Overall, this book is a great buy for any DSM'R

Does this book have performance torque specs? Any torque specs? Or is it moreso background information and not technical?

No torque specs. It has information on why to upgrade things, what order to upgrade them, and direction on what parts work well (both factory and aftermarket). It also give really good explanations on what thing do, both engine and tuning related. It has a lot of good information and is a good read. However if you are looking for torque specs or a how to, you need a repair manual. FSM, Haynes, or Chilton.

There are no "performance torque specs." Some upgraded parts (like head studs) are torqued more, but those values are set by the manufacturer and vary.

Torque specs are set by fastener strength. You don't tighten your lug nuts to 200ft/lbs just because you now have 500hp (confirmed via butt dyno, of course.)

Yeah, that would be bad. :notgood:

Thanks for digging up this old thread and all the reviews, looks like I'll be ordering two book, this one and the Mitsi one :thumb:

You should not have to explain that to a "Wiseman" with 3,000 posts and 5 reputation stars.
