After replacing the headgasket on this new talon i bought for 700$ It doesn't want to start. When i took the cylinder head off there was water ontop of the pistons. And the car DID run before i took it apart, i was driving it down the road from my house and it started to overheat so i took it back home and tore her down and replaced the headgasket. And now she doesn't want to start. Any ideas? Much appreciated.. And yes i am positive everything is hooked up.. thanks

Just so many things here. I would start with timing. Make sure everything is dead on and use a timing light.

Make sure the transistor plug is plugged up good. Its below where the coil pack mounts.

x2 on the timing. Was the head bolted and torqued in the proper sequence?

Make sure the cam angle sensor on the back of the head is plugged in. Otherwise it will just crank and not ever fire.

Also make sure the little valve under the intake on the throttle body side is connected good or it will try to fire bit never start.

Did you get the head checked? What hg was used? What studs?

ARP headstuds, felpro head gasket. Torqued by the sequence out of the manual. And timing is on 100% i made sure, turned the motor 6 times after timing it and it was still dead on. I've done timing a lot on these DSMs. But never came across a no start... It seems like it WANTS to start but it doesn't, just endlessly cranks over. Oh and the battery is kinda crappy. I tried jumping the car with my other car and still nothing. Just cranked over quicker LOL.. Any help is appreciated.. If it comes down to it I'll take a video and post it.

Check compression anyway, i had timing dead on and still i had valve issues just enough to bend them, you have fuel, spark?

Do you have fuel and spark? CAS being unplugged or having broken wires or like previously mentioned being 180* out could cause this. MFI relay possibly also.

Looks like someone beat me to the fuel/spark question.

I can't check compression right now i don't have a tester. And i don't know if i have fuel or spark. How would i go a upon testing for it?

any Fuel?

Also is it in The correct firing order.?

I am pretty sure it's getting fuel. And it is in the right firing order,
used this LOL

I don't know yet again. I am pretty sure though. And i doubt the CAS has anything to do with it, I never removed ANYthing from the head just unplugged everything and left the intake manifold on and lifted it from the car, how would i go upon checking for fuel and spark correctly?

You can check for spark by taking a spark plug out and holding it so the end is grounded on the head or valve cover (while still in the plug wire boot) and cranking the car over. Just watch the plug and see if it sparks or not. This is a lot easier to do with a second person. Do you hear your fuel pump turn on with the key? Also to make sure CAS is operating correctly unbolt it from the head but leave the wiring plugged in, mark it in some way so you know what direction to put it back in, and spin the piece that goes into the end of the cam while your key is on. Listen for the injectors to click while spinning the CAS.

Just checked and i have spark in all 4 wires, the first cylinder seemed to spark the most. Going to check for fuel here in a minute. And the CAS. Do you guys think an old battery would cause the car to not start?? I'm thinking of getting a new one, since i need it anyways.

Make sure you have everything plugged in. I have forgotten to plug the coil in. If the computer doesn't get 12v it will not run. Did you unhook the battery it is possible you blew a main fuse. Check grounds.

If you've been cranking it a lot and you have a decent fuel supply, chances are that the plugs should be wet or at least smell strongly of gasoline.

While i pulled the plugs to check for spark i smelled fuel. So yeah they were probably wet. I am going to get a new battery, and check for fuel. And see how it goes from there.

Some plugs don't like getting wet with fuel - I'd try to dry them out well before reusing them or just get a new set of standard plugs.

How hot did it get when it started to over heat? you could have worped the head posibly. Check compression, go to sears and get a tester for 60 bucks for a decent one. No valves looked bent or burnt when you had the head off did they?

Nope everything looked good and the car barely overheated as soon as i noticed the needle starting to budge i babied it home and the needle didnt even get close to the red mark.. And i just took my fuel line off on the timing side and cranked the car and fuel came right out of the stock fpr.. So i have fuel... I'm going to get new plugs and a battery and see how that goes.

^^^^

Like said above..go get a compression tester and check the compression......
Question: as the engine crank over does it sound like its cranking too fast?? If so that means air is escaping your not building any compression..mostly likely you just bent your valves...send video of the problem
