Hi, I came across on my travels, someone who was willing to sell me a aluminum 4g63 block with only 30,000 miles on it. Kind of weird, I have never seen anything like it. Light as a feather to. Whats the history with this?

I think 300-400ish. He says every dsm guy that shows up, checks it out, wants it.

Idk how much he knows about engines but, he did say the cyls look different...

That its lighter then his other blocks.

When I meant oil pump, I meant the front case side looks like a 4g63, has the oil ports and all that.

But to end all the arguing and name calling, lets just say its a cast iron block til proven otherwise.
Its just very light for cast iron. and its not due to no internals.

99GSTRACER<------------was there any stories or rumors that there might have been a all aluminum motor to ever leave the factory? I ask becuase i've grown up around muscle cars and i've heard AlOT of stories of so called prototype parts and cars that were to be destroyed after testing but somehow, someway they make it out of the factory you know. Im not trying to change the thread but you never know till you ask right=)

The block is a 4g63 the headgasket and head line up. so does the oil pump. and 6bolt oil pan. The block is about 20lbs lighter than a normal bare block and it is stock bore

normal bare block=95lbs
this on is about 76-78lbs

im not sure if it is alluminum that is just what i was told but it is a 4g63t has oil squirters and all. also has a 6bolt crank.

i can post more pix if needed. i do not know though if it is for sure aluminum it is just sitting in a corner of my garage

^^^ You're the blocks owner, I assume?

Yes, please post more pictures. Also, a cast aluminum version of the factory 4G63 block would probably weigh closer to 1/2 of the factory block, not 20 lbs lighter.

For the sake of comparison:

Dart BBC iron block = 310 lbs
Dart BBC alum block = 140 lbs.

Im in class on my phone. just one of you pm me your number and i will send you the pix i have on my phone. again not sure what the block is just know it is a lighter 4g63t
and not a standard 4g63t block

Does Aluminum Rust?
Aluminum corrodes but it does not rust. Rust refers only to iron and steel corrosion.

Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Aluminum oxide corrosion also looks a lot more like aluminum, so it isn't as easy to notice as rusted iron.

When iron corrodes the color changes and it actually expands. This expanding and color change can produce large red flakes that we all know as rust. Unlike aluminum oxide, the expanding and flaking off of rust exposes new metal to further rusting. This why it is so important to provide a barrier so rust doesn't start.

Because it isn't sleeved. All aluminum blocks are sleeved.

Or nicasil plated, but I can't see them doing that to just any random OEM engine.

I'm still confused on why you're so stuck on it being an aluminum 4g63. If it is aluminum (which by the poor pics it looks like cast iron), well I can stamp the letters 4g63 on a popcan, it's still just a popcan and not an aluminum 4g63.

If it was an oem-like aluminum block, it's probably too weak to use to make real power with anyways.

The cell phone pictures were horrible..

But on page 2 there are comparison pictures of a 4g63 block, and this block..They don't look the same at all..And everyone can see that..

I wonder if the guy has the head that came on this block sitting in the garage as well..:hmm:

Just the fact that the op was saying it can probably be picked up with one hand shows that he's just fanning the shit-wind, in my opinion anyway.

here are the pics

The pic showed a 2G 7 bolt block, this one looks exactly like a normal 6 bolt.

The block is a 4g63 the headgasket and head line up. so does the oil pump. and 6bolt oil pan. The block is about 20lbs lighter than a normal bare block and it is stock bore

normal bare block=95lbs
this on is about 76-78lbs

Again, this weight difference could be the normal difference between a 2G block with the extra trans bolt casting and the crank girdle and a 6 bolt, with the much lighter main caps.

A simple magnet test will confirm, as others have already said. Though everything in this thread already screams standard 6 bolt block, nothing to see here.

Well then someone post up a 6 bolt block with that phone photo and lets see what that looks like..

The block looks cast, so that's right..Otherwise is just pitting on the block..
