All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

could also be your bov gasket leaking, my flange was warped so i just put some rtv on it to make sure it sealed good

Yea it was a boost leak I should have known, I just wasn't sure if my turbo was supposed to be THAT loud. I was the little tab on my throttle body that was giving me the issues. The coupler was just over it so the slightess bit of air was passing through and whistling. Thanks for the help on such a noon question!

I noticed this for the first time tonight. I really don't know exactly how to describe this noise, so I didn't really know what to search for. It almost sounds like a small animal or even a baby is whining from inside my intake manifold... My best guess is that it's vacuum-related.

I'm around 3000kms on a freshly built 1g, swapped into my '97 Talon. Here is a vid of the noise.

Eagle Talon vacuum noise?? - YouTube

You can hear a tiny bit of a weird whine just at idle, but as you can tell from the video, even the slightest bit of gas and the noise is pretty loud afterward. I drove home after I noticed this, about a 3 minute drive, and was pretty nicely driving... the noise seemed to get a little quieter by the time I got home, but CERTAINLY not gone.

I'm probably worrying way too much about something small, but better safe than sorry. I haven't even put any more than 5psi through this motor yet. I put a LOT of time, effort, and money into this new motor, and I'd hate to have any major problems before I even get to have any fun with it. :p

Any ideas?

Update : No noise at all this morning, but I'm still worried. And what are the chances that this was an isolated incident and this noise won't come back? Somebody has to have some ideas...

Hope you realize I'm just guessing here. LOL Don't like giving bad advice.

Two things that come to mind are intake manifold gasket or throttle body gasket. I'm leaning towards intake manifold simply because the noise quited down after driving. Maybe the heat from the engine tightened things up.

Sounds like the gasket fluttering when the engine goes back into vacuum. Check the torque on the bolts, see if any were loose.

Check your PCV.

Also, you can unhook all the vacuum lines and tap the nipples, check to see if the sound goes away.

If it goes away, start by hooking up one vacuum line out of time, hook one and check if the sound comes back, if not, then go on to hook another one.

Crisis averted. As I thought, it was definitely something vacuum-related... More specifically, the hose coming off of the PCV. I found that while just pinching different hoses until the sound went away.

Apparently the hose we used to the PCV was a bit weak, and was starting to collapse under vacuum... And apparently make a sort of donkey/goose sound. So you were pretty close, miguelmcv.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Somebody commented on my youTube video too, saying "PCV vacuum line?"... So if I hadn't found it already, there was that, haha.

DSM'rs are basically awesome.

I would do a boost leak test. You will probably be surprised how many other things could be leaking. I thought my car was fine and i found that the TB gasket had a small leak and i needed to replace the BISS.

Hey everyone, me and my friend, along with my dad can't really identify this kind of noise, but it really sounds like its coming from the engine head, whitch was just rebuilt at the machine shop I took it to, and even though I'm certain we followed the manual on how to put everything back together, it sounds like something in the engine head is wrong..its like an un-even bumping noise, that does not happen right away, in this video I made it starts around the 30 second mark, its really hard to hear but its a faint bumping noise, you can tell the idle sounds different when you look at the begining of the video compared to the end of it, the noise gets slightly louder towards the end, whitch is why i cut off the motor.

I made the video inside the car, with the doors and windows closed to help cancel out the loud exhaust, you can actually here the noise better this way even though this video is still low quality (appolgies) but its barely noticeable when you're standing outside the car watching the motor, but I'll try to make a video like that later on anyways, heres the video:

Holy high idle. But sounds like lifters to me. Get your idle down to around 750-800 and see if you can hear it better outside.

Can this be done by moving the cam angle sensor on the head? I know I'm probably also running slightly rich for the fact that both my 02 sensors are still coming in the mail.

How could I check the lifters?

Yea it sounds like you have lifter tick there buddy. Does it go away if let it idle a little bit? Mine does and it sounds like what you got. Some times its loud and sometimes it doesnt tick at all. I dont know if that is how it is for you. But you shuld also get your idle down a little bit.

You lower your idle by turning the bliss screw on the TB (throttle boddy).

sorry not (bliss) biss

I will have to concure with lifter tick from what i hear. Of course with the experiance i have had with the 4G63, if it does not have lifter tick something is wrong haha!

Where to start? I have searched and searched.this all started the morning after I drove the car after a long road trip. Had no problems on the trip or anything. Upon start up I notice a low idle. Was on my way to the store for some wax when i notice the car felt sluggish. Hitting full boost but no blowoff whistle. Figured boost leak. ]

Went home and checked everything. Fine. Double checked with starting fluid. still fine. Checked all vaccuum line. everything was good. So i swapped Bov for the stock one no difference. Car idled fine at this point. Gave up called it a night.

Nextday....Went out to start it and recieved a loud tapping coming from the engine along with a rough idle. As far as i can tell its up top. -8'' of vaccum with a quickly fluctuating needle from -8'' to -10''hg (vaccuum). Sound becomes quicker with engine revs and is constant. Did the plug wire test for rod knock still remained constant no matter which wire was pulled.

Took to dealership. Compression was mid 150's across and timing was on. They are saying its Lifters(valve adjusters) on #2. Since my dad works there they said if the lifters didnt fix it then i wouldnt have to pay for the labor. Not bad. Car should be done monday. Im thinking valves from weak valve springs?

Car is stock besides a Greddy type S, K&n intake. New plugs, could use wires,

Any ideas? :hmm:

Wouldnt a vaccum test be done behind the throttle plate? As stated boost leak test done.

How do I go about adjusting the lifters? I can't find anything about it in the manual or on here, just removal and installation.

I have a feeler guage, but I'm not sure what to do..

there is no adjusting the "lifters" they are HLA's BTW

you just rebuilt the head, did you bleed the HLAs down before you installed the followers and cams?

ok this noise started yesterday and was barley noticible. It stopped and went away. 2 hours later im driving home and as im getting home this noise comes back but is much more louder. now this noise only presents itself while driving. comes and goes as i give it more throttle and let the AT shift. but im i move the gears manually it still makes the noise. As it gets really loud its super annoying and by making a complete stop it goes away.

It takes in all the gears nice and doesnt shift without a problem. heres a vid of the noise. Please view and thanks :)
