Hi everyone. I recently bought my 1st DSM car. 92 Eclipse turbo. It has 229k miles. quite original, as in hoses, acc. belts, fuel filter, clutch. it is black with a red interior. sunroof, cd cassette. Interior has no rips or tears. Headliner is sagging. Body is nice, no rust or dents. Roof and rear spoiler clearcoat have sun damage. Front of hood is chipped and pitted from highway.
Unfortunatly it needs a head gasket. I knew that before I bought it. I can do the repair myself. I'm unfamiliar with these cars though.
I'm not looking to spend a ton , just get it running. So far I'm thinking head gasket, check for head surface for straight, head bolts, waterpump and it's due for a timing belt.

I have a service manual ordered.

I have looked thru several posts and think I found a good one to give me a head start. <ha, head start> I don't have a ton of time to spend looking thru posts , so I hope to be able to get answsers with out being told to look it up please. :)
Is the factory service manual detailed enough to do this job?
Few more simple questions.

What is a 1G? 2G?
What does 6 or 7 bolt refer to?

Thanks.

6 Bolt/7 bolt refers to the model of engine. 89-early 92 were 6 bolt. The "bolts" refer to the number of bolts holding the flywheel to the crankshaft.

The Chilton/Haynes manuals pretty much cover the procedure. The book has unnecessay steps, they say to remove the intake manifold, exhaust manifold. Most people leave them in place while pulling the head. I usually pull the exhaust manifold.

The intake manifold has a support bracket on the rear that has to be unhooked. Mine was such a bear to get to that I left it off just in case I ever have to do the job again.

Jump in, get your feet wet. Take your time. When you run into problems, search on here for the answers to specific questions. We'll be glad to help but feel that you will learn more doing things yourself.

Thanks for the replies.

Mine is an Aug 91.

I have a factory manual on order. If it isn't what I need I sure will ask you for your copy.
I'll try to post a pic.

Not sure how to get a bigger pic.
