Stuck on the interstate LOL since I have free time waiting on a ride and tow I want to get everyones opinion on what could be the cause. I was driving down the interstate no problems when the car just shuts off. The electrical was still on but engine just quit. First thing I checked was timing belt and its still there. I checked spark its there. It actlike it wants to start when I turn it over it spit and sputters. Just put gas in it this morning. Any help is greatly welcome

Ok back for an update. The car will now crank and idle (still spits and sutters alittle bit) but when I rev it up, It will go to about 3500RPMS and cut out so bad that til will not go higher. sounds like it hits a rev limiter or something. I tested the CPS with OHM meter and checks out perfectly. New pump is working good and primes when I turn it over. I checked the timing again and its spot on. I am at a loss of ideas on what to do. I hate to say it but I am about to take it to a shop to have it fixed.

What else can I do to figure out why this is happening?

BUMP! Im in a bind. Does anyone think it may be the ECU?

I will make a video soon.

My friends N/T did this about a week ago, It turned out to be his fuel pump relay was not functioning correct. Swapped that out and he was running right again.

Some days his car would work fine, others he couldnt do much over 3500rpm.

Ok I will switch the relays. Is there any way I can jump the relay so it runs the pump so I can test?

Ok checked the relays and they are working as they should. Im at a loss...

Another bump! I called some shops and each one mentioned the ECU and needing to be scanned. I am going to get a logger today to see if there is any other codes beside the ones in the other thread I made.

Did you check any other sensors? TPS, ISC? Those (and my air temp) started to go bad on my car and it did the same thing. It would start and run for about 10 seconds but the instant i touched the gas to go the car would die on me. Also, do you have a check engine light on?

*UPDATE*

Ok I got the new ECU today and the old codes are now gone and battery light is off. The car will now start and idle but throwing code P1390 which means the timing is off by a tooth. I checked it at the cams and it was dead on but I have NOT check it at the crank. I have added a video to the first post that shows that its doing today.

OK yesterday I took the timing cover off and checked timing at the crank and again at the cams and it is dead on... all that work just to find the timing belt is not my problem. Im at a loss for words. WHAT CAN I DO?

cannot remember if those cars had governers in them. If they do, that could be part of it. my neon of similar year had a speed sensor go bad. told the computer it was going 255mph and shut the fuel off and made it sputter going down the road. Even at a standstill, said it was going too fast as the cut off was 118, i believe.

I'm having random shutting down problems on mine so I'm ordering a new CPS and CAS today. I couldn't see how the VSS could be malfunctioning on yours unless it was shorting out. I've never heard of one of those going bad on a car but I'll ask a couple mechanics I know the next time I see them.

Man it sounds like your timing is just really off but you said it wasn't. If a fuel injector was bad that would really mess up the performance of it BUT it would still accellerate without any load on the engine and they don't stop working in pairs. Another thing I would look around for are shorts in the harness. Check around your wiring harness in the dark in the evening or night time. If you have a short you should be able to see tiny sparks. Also check the wires to your CAS closely. I know some cars in particular are known for exposed wires at the CAS plug that can crack from old age and short against the engine or each other. Just for preventative maintenance I like to wrap them in electrical tape really quick when I am near them.

you've never heard of a VSS going bad? mine went bad not even a month ago. didn't cause the OP's symptoms though, i just didn't have a speedometer.

Well I spoke too quickly sorry. I haven't heard of one going bad and causing the engine to run whacky in an older car like this is all. :)

My speedo still works, I can drive it around my yard but flooring it will backfire and bog down until it cuts off. I am going to recheck all wireing down to the CPS and CAM

You need to get a can of brake cleaner, and clean your injectors. Make sure you have your fireing order correct, and that your wires arnt cut any.

*UPDATE!*

Ok, yesterday I changed the Cam Sensor and rechecked the wiring on my crank sensor. All of it looks good but still does not run. I am going to take the injectors out today if i can figure out a way to get them out LOL without having to take the whole intake off.

This car saddens me :(

Not sure if you have changed out the MAP sensor but you should check it out next. I tried to put a new CAS in and it didn't help me. Then I have a new Cam Position Sensor here but haven't ordered the pigtail to make it plug in yet. :) But I did put a OBD2 scanner on and had to mess with the car for a half hour to make it throw a code finally and it gave me the communication error in regards to the MAP sensor. They are refunding my money for the CAS and then I'll use that credit towards a new MAP sensor which I'm hoping will do the trick.

It's kind of a long shot but I had a car doing that exact thing and the cat was stopped up. If you have a cat converter on it next time it's running and your revving it up look under at the cat and see if it or the pipe around it it glowing red. Like I said long shot but may help.
