So just wanted to share my experience putting in Interior lighting today in my 2g eclipse, that's all this is so if the title was misleading sorry!
I went to ross today and found 2 15" blue led tubes that had a 12v plug (cigarette lighter) and so I baught them figuring I'd give them a try, speaking they were only 4.99$ each! I realized that my dsm has only 1 12v plug so I realized i would need to get a splitter so that I could have more 12v ports. I know some of you are probably thinking " don't even mess with all that just go hardwire...." well, I don't have money to get someone to do that for me, and I didn't have enough experience to know what the hell i was doing so i decided not to cut any wires with this job. I have wanted to install blue interior lights to match my new headunit I just got, which has a crystal blue interface so that is why i chose blue lights. I could have purchaced 20" green for the same price, but after installing I'm glad i didn't because they wouldn't have fit, and if I have bought both, they wouln't have matched whatsoever, and I definatly don't want to go ricey having all of these led's up in my ride. I went to autozone and looked at their splitters and realized that they seemed extremely overpriced. So i traveled to the ol' walmart and found them for 9 bucks instead of 18. Even better, I found a splitter at walmart that had a blue led 12v plug and mounting adhesive so that the unit could be installed practically anywhere. Ontop of that, the unit lit up blue as well!!! Realizing all the BLUE BLUE BLUE, i also realized, that the 12v plugs for my led tubes were clear, so when they were plugged into the 12v splitter, They ALSO illumated blue. checking how the lights compared to eachother, amazingly all of the blue in my car was the Exact same tone. So there isn't any clashing of colors. Underneath my headunit I have an empty space that i use for cd's etc. If you have a dsm, its obvious what i'm talking about right now. I wanted to put the splitting unit in there, and decided that if i stuck it to the top of the box, I would still have enough space to slip cd's underneath it. So that's what i did! and man, that adhesive holds strong as crap. I tried taking it out after a few minutes to see if it would look good somewhere else, and it wouldn't budge, but i'm glad, because I would have moved it back anyways, and if i have taken it out the adhesive might not have held so well anymore. So now that I had that installed, I wanted to find out where i wanted to put in the led's. Originally i planned on putting them under the dash on both sides of the car, but as the innards of both sides differed, they lights would have been uneven, and there really wasn't anything i wanted to screw into down there to hold the lights in place. So i decided to put them under the front rim of my seats. I screwed the screws through the carpet and that was it, enough to hold it down snug, and that was it. I didn't want to have all this wire everywhere because frankly that looks stupid. So I tucked it into the trim from the sterio box up the side then back down towards the side of the seats. Pretty much, I followed the cracks. This took me a long time, and was not easy, One side installed easier than the other, but it was still tough. Any extra cord I just pushed under the trim so now, you can't even tell that I have interior lighting unless it's dark in my car. The actual led's cant be seen unless you are looking under the front of the seat. and when you are in the car light comes out from under your seat like you just layed a golden egg. or should i say a shiny blue egg. (stupid humor)... ANYWAYS...now that it's all put together... I love it. It's not too much, and it's not too little. It's how i wanted it to be. total cost was a few cents more of 20 bucks. Thanks for reading! if you had any questions hopefully i may have answered some.
