the pop up or fiberglass glass replacement sounds good 2 me. i think the real issue is getting the proper weatherstripping

I just wanted to post an update of the carbon fiber sunroof that I made. Its fully functional and well that's because its just an overlay on the factory glass. I ordered a 24"x36" piece of the 3M carbon fiber vinyl off of ebay for a total of $40 shipped. I had my uncle install it for me and it came out beautifully with no bubbles. I wanted him to clearcoat it as well but he didn't feel comfortable with that since automotive clearcoat is some strong stuff. O well looks like I have the dry carbon look instead. I mostly wanted to do this since it was only $40 and I didn't have the sunshade in my car. Now I can cruise with the sunroof vented and not be baked by the sun glaring down on my face.

I don't think a vinyl sticker is what this thread had in mind.

Looks very cheaply done IMO... but hey, at least you have an I(heart) Haters sticker! :D

Ugh haters gonna hate LOL. I know this wasn't the point of the thread but everyone wants a plug and then bitches about the high price tag. I just needed a sunshade and this was cheaper than an oem one. I'm sure it would look nicer on a car with paint like yours my exterior needs some serious attention.

i wanted a plug for my roof too and i dont know why i havent seen a DIY'r make a fiberglass one them self. i guess ill have to try this myself LOL even though i looooove my sunroof because it doesnt leak one bit =) but my theory would be to remove the stock mounting bracket on the sunroof glass and then make slab of fiberglass and attach the mounting brackets to the underside..then paint and apply the weatherstrip around the edge. Sounds simple right?! LOL i might attempt this just to see how it comes out...

Hi folks just found this thread I have made a mold of the complete roof I have already cut all the sheet metal and it fits perfectly and it has no sunroof it is a complete roof I am going to weight the skin and sunroof assembly against the piece that I made this will be for a race car and no liner will go on it, I have some pictures I have taken will post them later, the weight reduction will be significant especially this top weight.

A sunroof assembly is 27.5 pounds. I pull it every time I run.. It's (6) 10mm nuts, and I leave the headliner in the garage with the rest of the unneeded parts.

On my to-do list with the sunroof is simply to leave the frame in place, with the factory drains operational, and replace the glass with a thinner, lighter material. It's the best solution I've come up with that I can carry out myself.

Re: sunroof plug: How do we get it to seal?

I will weight all the pieces separate this wkend I may have thrown out maybe parts from it I will take pictures of what I have with the weights.

I may give a shot at making a mold from the glass but it will not be anytime soon as I still have a lot of work on my car.

I just weighted some of my pieces

roof w/o glass and no liner and some hardware off it 31 1/2 lbs.
roof same as above w glass 43 1/2 lbs.
glass w plastic liner or gasket 12 lbs.

New fiber roof 8 lbs.

Weight savings would be more than 35 lbs because I had already thrown away a lot of hardware.
