The car in question is a 1990 talon tsi awd, not the car in my profile. The only mod done to it is a Dejon intake pipe with bov recirculated and 1g unhacked maf. The problem is that the vehicle will start with started fluid, run rough for about a few minutes then, dies slowly.
Quick stats:
Compression read 165 across the board
Have spark all four: new wires, new distributor, new ngk plugs gapped to .28
Have fuel coming out of hp fuel hose while cranking and new fuel filter.
I have Double checked the cas for 180* flip around.
My timing marks all line up every 6 turns with 1/2 ratchet.
None of my gauges work: tach, oil pressure, gas, etc
Dash lights DO work though including turn signals, high beam, door open etc.
No CEL or Other dummy lights while starting.
Have checked to see if ecu but another 90 ecu out of running car didnt fix anything.
Alt fuse replaced with brand new fuse, checked mpi fuses, and fuel pump fuse.
Have done a boost leak and fixed major leak from stock ic piping.
Holds 15 psi fine for 30 seconds during boost leak test.
Has about 3 gallons of fresh fuel 93 oct. drained out old fluid and cleaned gas tank.
Also replaced the fuel pump with good stock unit and restudded cap. no leaks

Any suggestions on continuing my trouble shooting of this car?
I learned everything above ^^^ using older posts but could not trace cause.

If it only starts wiatah te fluid then concentrate. On that, maybe you should check the cas, also could be that mass, are you sure its hacked correctly. Check fpr, try to see how your fuel pressure is. Keep testing there's many more tests, and the electrical issue should be the back up fusible link in the engine bay, if I can remember, it should control all that

Oh sorry just reed your mass is unhacked. So ignore tht part, try plugging it and see if it makes a difference though,

Also for the non working gauges, try swapping another one in to test it

The ol' girl started up on her own without any starting fluid!!!! LOL The car now idles until I decide to turn it off but still takes awhile to re-start. From reading a few more posts I am starting to suspect the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. So that's what I'll be replacing then I'll post back.

concept4g63: I tried my buddy's gauge cluster (90) but still no luck with those. Any fuses inside under the dash that power the gauges? Like I said, back lights work but not the needle gauges. Also the check engine light, oil light and other start up lights don't turn on.

Do you know anything about what was done to it shortly before it went belly up? Or was it just starting and driving fine until one day this happened (seems unlikely if the ECU is still good)?

The vehicle was purchased in a "non-running" condition. So far I've just replaced the fuel pump to get it to run and now just trying to get it to idle/ start consistently. It now just has a tough time starting up multiple times in a row. The first time around it fires up and will idle relatively smooth until I shut it off. Each subsequent attempt to fire up just cranks but wont start up. Of the first 18 pages of no start threads, many have mentioned the ect sensor as a good place to check. I have another ect sensor to test tonight so that is next on the list.

Engine coolant temp sensor is definently one of the things you want to check. I would also pull out the ecu and check for any leaking capacitors or burn marks on the front and back of the board.

Thanks Boostin, She now starts and runs fine with the addition of the new ect sensor!!! I didn't have a chance to play with the car until today and she now starts up every time.

Now, my main issue to figure out is those damn gauges that don't work. The backlight works on the gauges same with turn signals, high beam light, door open light...but the tachometer, gas, coolant temp, don't move when on. Also the oil pressure light and CEL don't come on either.
