ok so i just replaced spark plugs and the wires and the two heater hoses in my 98 eclipse gst because the one coming off my thermostat was spewing antifreeze so after that it was running fine but when i took it on the freeway it just gave out and white smoke was coming out of my exhaust alot of it...and it smells sweet like antifreeze is in it is that a blown headgasket? or turbo? how do i know for sure?

Pop your radiator cap off and see if, it comes out or bubbles out.

Symptoms I have had in the past.

Shooting steam out.
Bubbling very excessive and steam.
Literally pushing the coolant out. I mean like gallon a minute. Incredible.

All were blown headgaskets.

But recheck your connections, and make sure there is no way the throttlebody is to blame in some weird way.

run a compression test. a lot of times that can give you a good idea weather or not it is the head gasket. also check for oil in your coolant and also check to see if your oil is watered down. i cant think of another test you can run off the top of my head. ill ask my buddy tomorrow. but i would try those before anything. about the only way i know to check to see if a turbo is bad or not is by checking to see if there is any shaft play on the compressor and hot side of the turbo. that and check to see if the oil feed is leaking or not. I'm sure more experienced members will read your post and will probably have more helpful information than what i can provide. But i hope at least i pointed you in the right direction. Good luck

ok well i checked my oil and it doesnt look creamy but its dark in washington now so i will check the coolant and another bit of information when i start it it wont start on its own it starts if i push the gas, but i need to push the gas in a bit for it to run and still smoke is coming out of the exhaust. the only way i can explain how it runs when i get it started and rev the engine it just sounds horrible like a lawn mower...

Man, that does not sound good. Sounds like coolant is burning in the chamber causing a misfire.

Def sounds like headgasket. Pull the drain plug on radiator check for oil. If ## not willin to do that then the sweet smell out of the exhaust is a strong tell tell that the gasket is gone

if its causing a misfire what does that mean i will have to replace?

i can digg that LOL apr bolts are sold at any shop also?

ok just checked popped my radiator cap and no water... so im gonna drain what is left in it:) and check that way

Head gasket sounds bad like everyone eles is saying. I would just shop around before buying one. I actually bought my felpro permatorque head gasket for 10 bucks and found someone selling both ARP head and main studs for 100 bucks. Extreme psi sells a felpro head gasket and arp head studs for around 300 dollars so if you take a little time and look you can really save alot of money and get the same parts.

if your burning coolant(white smoke, not blue) and its not coming from the TB, you have a bad HG no question. there can be no other answer.

Head gaskets can fail in all kinds of ways:

A compression test won't tell you anything about where you are leaking pressure. A leak-down test would be a much better idea.

Could be a cracked block or cylinder as well (although a head gasket is more likely).

There are ALWAYS other possibilities...especially on a DSM. :)

Very true cracked blocks and heads are rare But very possiable.

oh god that sounds expensive like i should buy a new engine or something empty my coolant to see if theres oil in that and ill check my oil one more time and update ya guys

ok so there was no oil in my coolant and my oil doesnt look like creamy light brown...so idk what it is i guess i will have someone rebuild the turbo for me anyone know what most people do it for? and ill replace the headgasket but before those ill do a leakage test

yep it was a blown head gasket:) and my boggin down i think was from my intake manifold gasket it had a cut down it

i dont know if thats sarcasm or not LOL but thanks everybody for the help:)

ok smash will do thanks for the tip:) sorry mini didnt know how to take that LOL well thanks for your help fellas ill let you know if it starts here in a few days:)

Wouldn't white smoke just be burning coolant? If head gasket was blown you'd be getting blue smoke and missing oil.. or oil in your coolant reservoir

^^^ no not necessary if you have a blown head gasket you can have coolant burning in your combustion chamber..couple of ways to tell if you have a blown head gasket
1.your burning coolant (white smoke coming out exhaust)
2.coolant bursting out of any opeing it can find (most common from coolant reservoir)
3.get your hands on a pressure test,do the test, if you can't find any leaks but still losing pressure (can be by passing the head gasket) solution new gasket...

There more ways that you can tell but can't think of it right now...
Note* if ## replacing a head gasket, get your head checked out for warpage...

that something most people overlook..i had 2 different cases where the problem was a warp head

ya and i heard turbo was blue smoke. also i already took off my heads and in the proccess i have coolant in my spark plugs and the gasket was blown.

i will have someone check them out thank you darkgant:)
