My 98 eclipse gsx just started heating up and now when i start it up it goes to the half way point on the heat gauge then if i rev it a tiny bit, the needle shoots up gauge... what could be wrong and what should i do?

First replace the thermostat. It's a cheap part and it's could be just stuck..Second when Is the last time you replaced the coolant? I would start by replacing the thermostat..

forst thing I woud do is pop the hood, then remove the rad cap (COLD) then start the car and rev it.. if water/coolent gysers from the rad.. good sign of a blown HG

Really?? I did this after a HG change and thought it was the water pump just pushing the coolant.

IDK, this was 4 months ago. Still holding strong.

Just dealt with this myself. My t-stat was stuck and the radiator cap was expired (the rubber gasket was corroded).

Circled in red is the thermostat housing and the radiator cap you should check. You could also be low on coolant. When you remove the cap, you should be able to see green coolant. If not, you're probably low. If you're full up on coolant and your cap looks all right, then you'll need to drain the radiator via the small plastic plug at the bottom on the driver's side.

You're sensors could be shot or have a loose connection. Does the fan still come on when it gets hot?

97gst spyder...... not an inch or so over the filler neck... I am saying like a foot up in the air, if the HG has let all the compresion in to the cooling system it will shoot wayyyyyy up

Same thing happens, only with oil and sideways out of the car, if you forget to put the oil plug bolt back on the passenger side of the head. LOL

Glad to hear that you got it resolved, Goat. :thumb:
