So Friday, 7/22/2011 I'm making the 4 hour drive home from alamosa where I'm currently working. I'm about 10 mins from home, in arvada, when I'm exiting from c470 onto i70 east. I'm going to put my car from 3rd to 4th gear and let the clutch out and clunk. The trany lost all power from the motor. It still goes into every gear perfect, even reverse, just doesn't get power anymore. Even with the car started, clutch pedal all the way out, it goes into every gear which shouldn't be at all possible. I checked my linkage, cables, slave and master cylenders, and clutch line. Everything checks out perfect. Even the fork throw. So would this be a case of my clutch disk splines stripping, or my input shaft breaking? There is no noise of any kind coming from the trany at all that indicates something internal has broke. And as I stated before it shifts perfect. The trany doesn't even make any noises if the car rolls. The setup is a 7bolt with a compatition stage 5 unsprung 6 puck clutch and resurfaced oem flywheel with only 12k miles on them. The clutch also used to chatter a bit with the clutch pedal out and now there's no chatter at all. Anyone have this happen or have any ideas? I would love to hear and gain some info before I go ripping it all apart again! Thanks guys/gals, Ryan

You actually saw the shift levers on the tranny move properly when shifting?
If so, can you "feel" the normal tranny resistance (and notching) on the shifter of going into gear when shifting?
An input shaft breaking would be astronomical.

Sounds like it could be the clutch disk center hub broke clean off the rest of the clutch disk which would totally disconnect it from the tranny. When you installed the disk/pressure plate did you use a disk centering tool? If not, the disk could have installed slightly off center which would bend/weaken the disk hub attachment points (thus chatter and eventual breakage).

There may be some pieces lying at the bottom of the bell housing to give a clue. Remove the bell housing cover and look.

Had similar symptoms when my clutch disk burnt all its friction material off. Car would go into every gear just fine, but it wouldn't move under power. Of course I had prior warning of what was to come. The clutch had been slipping for a while. :(

Put a new clutch and slave cylinder in, boom, problem fixed. The old disk had absolutely no friction material left on it. I would say I got my money's worth out of it. Lol.

Was the vehicle showing any hesitation in response under throttle with the clutch fully engaged? You state that your clutch was chattering some and then it stopped. Did it always chatter from the moment you first drove it after install, or did it progressively get worse? If both and/or either of these sound familiar, then there is a possibility that your clutch disc wore prematurely. If neither then it is possible that there is some other mechanical issue. The only way to really know, is to take it apart and see what's going on.

I did use the clutch alignment tool during the install. And the trany nor the clutch have givin me any signs of wear or hesitation at all. My car was hesitating due to some bad spark plug wires...measured the resistance with a multimeter...but other than that the drivng and shifting have been flawless. And as far as the chatter goes its done it since day one. Its just the normal chatter because its a unsprung disk. Everyone of my buddies that have run a unsprung setup say its totaly normal. There was a slight wine from the trany in second and first during acceleration but its done it since I swapped in this trans....3 years ago...my talon is a 95 tsi awd but the trans and t case came from a 97 awd that only had 10k miles on the rebuild. The guy told me it was just the basic rebuild from jacks transmission. And I had one of my buddies watch the levers on the trans and they moved fine. There was also the normal resistance/notchy feeling of the trans going into all the gears and reverse

If you out it in gear and take off the clutch does it stall on you or no?

No it doesn't try to stall or hesitate at all. I can put it in any gear, let the clutch out, and nothing changes at all. It just keeps on idling and running fine. Like I said there are no noises coming from the trany at all. Running or rolling. Its like the clutch isn't enguaging at all. As if the input shaft isn't turning or the clutch disk lost the splines or even the input shaft lost the splines so the trany is getting no power. But what makes it weird is that if something internally broke it would sound like a bunch of rocks in a can from the trany. And if the car were rolling it would sound worse than that. Its so odd

Well go and pull the trans then.

There's no other way to figure it out without pulling it.

MAKE SURE you're actually putting it into gear before you pull it. As in somethings not broke in the shifter linkage.
