OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

If the knock sensor is bad what is ecmlink going to say typically? I'm just curious because I'm having similar symptoms but ecmlink shows knock at 0 I'm starting to think my issue is a water pump because I can hear it make little squeals.

My 93 1.8L i bought for 450$ needed a HG..

I replaced the Water Pump, Headgasket, Thermostat, and the Rad Cap.. And i have the fans kicking on at all times now with a switch..
It ran fine for 100 miles.

Now it keeps wanting to overheat again..

What can it be now..

Is it actually overheating to the point that it is spewing out of the overflow tank or are we just basing this off of the temperature gauge?

I had an issue a few years ago with my 1.8 showing overheating and it really wasn't. Turns out that many bottles of stop leak had created this copper ring around the temp sensor in the T-Stat housing. Replaced it and no more overheating.

Please keep in the back of your mind, you need to take that head to a machine shop and have it decked with a new surface, even the slightest warp in your head can allow pressure to enter your coolant chambers and pressurize the coolant system, have you ever seen bubbles coming up thru your coolant tank when you turn the car off knowing that it is not overheated..thats a good sign off blowby and may need to check into redoing the hg and machine the head...

Haha i feel retarded at this point. i was looking around for my oil pressure gauge and realized i thought my OP gauge was the heat gauge and well the OP was hitting really high almost instantly so i thought it was my oil temp freaking out. Well i have no overheating issue anymore but i do have the issue with what i believe is high OP. My OP goes to the second white notch and stays pretty consitently up there.

Any ideas on my new problem with the OP. And for those who read my last thread on this i retorqued my head to 79 lbs and all seams fine with it no leaks in the head gaskets like was thought before since i am no overheating.( MY bad for that thread i feel like a IDIOT).

OP= Oil pressure(for clarification)

Agree with this 100%. Also, make sure you use new head bolts since they are TTY. Sounds stupid, but have been down that road one too many times.

Did you make sure to to re-torque the head if not try doing so now althogh it may be too late with a hundred miles.

If you have not already resolved your oil pressure issue and you do not hear your valves rattling to high heaven, I would recommend grounding out the wire leading to the oil pressure sending unit. If the gauge reads -max pressure- than the gauge is likely not inoperative and your sending unit is most likely the culprit.

Yea i banged on my dash and the coolant temp went to the first notch and then back up to really high. My oil pressure also started to drop. I am going to replace both gauges and senders and see if i can get better readings.

My car is running good and now that i know my gauges are messed up i will be up and running here soon.

I have a quick questions: can i wire in a tach gauge using the stock white tach wire?

I have a similar issue. I think I have narrowed mine down though. I'm fairly certain I have a blown head gasket and I'm burning coolant. Did you notice any bubbles with the thermostat removed? My car seems to run fine most of the time with air flowing through the radiator until I burn enough coolant that there is none to be cooled. I don't always smell coolant but lately it's gotten worse. I also put some sort of stop leak in it, but for the head, and it worked for a while but now it's time for a new gasket. Anyhow, I don't think I read anything about bubbles but checking for them while hot but not overheating is what I did. It seemed to have some effect on my fans also which I'm unsure about. I think worst case scenario you might want to rule out the head gasket.

So story is my car is somewhat overheating... its going a little past halfway. I replaced my thermostat in the winter, with a 180 deg thermostat. Recently i took off my a/c fan because it was touching my new 3" dp, which was melting the fan in the end. So my question is do you think the car would overheat without the a/c fan? or does it have to do with my thermostat...... Or possibly the coolant, i put in 50/50 mix coolant in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

The ac fan only turns on when the ac is on..

The other fan is the cooldown to the engine fan..So if it's over heating and that fan is turning on then your thermostat is working correctly..

If the temperature rises too much, the AC fan will kick on as well. If you have the stock fan still then I would look else where for your issue other than the fan.

Thermostat maybe, but have you checked your coolant level and made sure there is not any trapped air? Wrapping your down pipe should help as well to reduce heat radiation which your radiator could be soaking up.
