Hello, Im new to this site and finally got myself a dsm after a lil honda that couldnt handle the boost. Anyways Im in the process of paying off this 91 gsx that has a rebuilt engine and ive notice that it smokes like alot. Ive been readin that the rings havent settle in yet or the valve guides? Im lost. It has 200miles on the new engine. The mods are b16g, 3 to 2.5 exhaust with test pipe, greddy type rs bov and i think thats it? Everything else is completely stock. I will have the guy show me the receipt again. It has evo 9 pistons so the compression is raised a bit. Here is the vid of the car.

I finished my rebuild that also has the EVO 9 pistons and when I started mine, it didn't smoke once. It now has 2k miles on it and I have yet to see any smoke. I would think that the rings were not fit right. I don't know if the rings not being settled in would result in smoking that much. I would look into turbo seals or maybe find out for sure who built it and see if they even know what they are doing.

Found this smoke chart from one of the guides on here, Hope it helps....

Checking for Smoke: During your test drive, be aware of any excessive smoking under hard acceleration or deceleration.

Blue on acceleration: Rings or turbo seals
Blue on deceleration: Valve stem seals
White on acceleration: Head gasket or turbo seals
Black on acceleration: Fuel (running rich or running without a cat)

Ill be sure to check this things out. I believe the engine has warranty. If it continues Ill just take it back and have it rebuilt. sounds about right? The car sounds nice. When I step on it it will throw a cloud of smoke. after driving it. it goes a away a lil bit.

Anymore ideas anyone?

My 2g with a 6 bolt swap is doing the exact same thing.
I'm thinking it's my 20g buschur turbo seal or piston rings. As I bought both used from members on the site, and that makes me leery and I'm leaning toward both being the culprit.

Oil getting past the rings will likely show up on the spark plugs. If they look OK, then pull the O2 housing off and see if it has a bunch of muck in it.

Hmmm. Ill check the spark plugs and see. Ill drive it up to 500miles and see how it does. I been told that the rings have not been seated yet which could be true since the engine barely has 250miles on it.

Also I would recommend braking in the rings with some boost. Boost will really push the rings into the block and create a good seal in the break in period. Run the motor under 50%-75% of max desired boost on a freeway with a constant accleration and deceleration driving style.
Oh, and dont forget to change the motor oil and filter fequently during break in. With my motor, during the break in period I changed my oil/filter @ the 100mi, 500mi, 2000mi intervals. There WILL be alot of metal in the oil.

So I finally had the chance to to check out the sparkplugs and everything seem fine. no oil in them. However, the smoke seem to stop a bit like mainly in start ups and once cruising I cant see from the rear window. Could be the valve stems? Or turbo seals.

Yeah I will do that right about now. Smoke isnt even that bad no more.

Seriously WTF is up with this car man. So far Ive owned it for about 2 weeks and starting to keep me worried. I started it up today ( i been driving the car like this btw) and today i had the hood open and gave it a couple of quick revs and notice smoke coming out from this area in the pic. (circle part) bluish smoke. I also put my hand on the exhaust while on and smells like oil. what could be the problem in the picture?

Sometimes I think the engine wasnt rebuilt or something. I did a compression test and got 149-150 150 150 150 all across. sparkplugs looked good too. no oil on them. Im thinking maybe valve seals or turbo probably going bad or a leak down to verify.

I have the same issue, my car has about 100 miles on the new motor and it smokes once its warmed up and has the same symptoms except there is oil around the plugs metal circle. I gaped the rings to 22 top and 25 bottom, the head was freshly built and the turbo does not have any oil in it so that is ruled out. I believe it is my rings even tho the gap number is within specs my car doesnt seem to like it. I will pull the pistons eventually to replace the rings with a tighter gap. I will bet that your problem is the ring gap is to large or the oil rings below the 1st 2 was over laped or has an issue. In my oppinion it is definitely your rings. since you have a warrenty I would get them to fix it but it really wont cause any damage except more carbon build up on sensors and more smoke. My car smokes but has 175 across the board and it has very little blow by leak so to me my car is picky because I havent heard anyone having problems with the same gaps I am running.

I've had the same thing on my 2.3 stroker but my intercooler was full of oil from my old pistons landings blowing. I jus kept driving and it went away.

thats what im doing. still driving that shyt no matter what. Im pointing fingers to the seals since this happens in deceleration. I have no oil in the sparkplugs. nothing 0 clean.

Maybe yours hasnt seated yet. Mine now has 667 miles on it. Im going to call the previous owner to tell him whats up with this. He showed me the reciept so he wasnt lying. Unless he made that shit up?

well hopefully it is just the valve seals or something minor as long as your motor stays together just keep an eye on it if it worsens. I dont know if he was lying or not but hes probably gunna play dumb either way. good luck tho lemme know if anything changes down the road

So I pulled out the intake from the turbo inlet and saw oil in there. The lil rubber coupler had oil. then the inlet has a tiny puddle of fresh oil, not oil residue. Im thinking on removing the one the connects to the ic. Does this show signs of a turbo seals going bad?

I had a similar smoking issues but it had cleared up within 250 miles.

It was especially bad on the first 10 minutes of idle. I cranked it up inside the garage then had to roll it outside to let it idle.

I think it may have been the brand of assy lube I was using. Smoked like hell for 10 minutes then a little less, it had all cleared up by the first oil change, and was puffing just a little bit on and off until the 3rd oil change @ 250, never saw it again. I was using the motoman breaking method.

The weird thing is that as soon as I took it out for a spin to court. The car wasn't smoking at idle. It greeted me with a puff of bluish smoke as soon as I started when I got back. I was checking the ic piping but saw no oil there? Also notice that between the turbo manifold and head is black burnt oil I think. Like it comes out from the manifold gasket n sticks to the heads surface. WTF?????? Car runs good though!? Valve seals or turbo is what I'm pointing at. Moar help!
