My mom boyfriend when he had the car got a new motor swaped in when his old one went out. It seems that the plug the lets the oil pressure be read is not plugged in because the wire is short and the mechanic that put in the plug just didnt do it. So I talked to another DSM'er and he said just cut and splice in another wire to make it longer. Just wondering what size wire to use and if there is a certain type of wire? Also what could I put over it to water proof it? would automotive electrical tape work?

Mine was the same way.. The guy i bought my car from hacked the temp sensor and the oil pressure wires..(No wonder he blew the head gasket LOL).. I picked up normal wire like 16-18 gauge and put it on both.. Don't remember what size exactly.. Look at the wire thats there and pick up whatever is the same size they normally let you take it out too check its the right size..

And ya electric tape works but try to heat wrap it too i have to pull mine of and retape it soon because i leaked power-steering fluid(before i removed the entire unit) and it caused the tape to get loose and nasty..

Make sure you solder it though and if you cant and have to resort to a twist.. Do it right..Like y both wire ends and then twist them together. You will end up with two ends then twist those together too..

+^^ on the shrink tubing. Anytime I have to cut any part of the harness or splice anything in I always flare out the strands. Then apply some soldering flux to both ends. Push the fanned ends together and twist the strands together. The flux pulls the solder into the center of the bundle of wires and ensures it will stick and bite hold of the wire. Its not a bad idea to try to match the wire color or find a new (used) plug with longer wires that someone chopped out.

So would it be easier to got the the junk yard and try to pull another plug, for just splice? I don't have a solder, i usually just put the wire in a shrink tube and just crimp it tight then tape it to hell. The car has not been reading oil pressure for years. (not my fault got the car like this and I'M trying to fix it) So Im assuming it has created problems. I am leaking oil into my valve cover under the spark plugs( put a new seal in my oil cap so that was not it) and another DSM'er told me its either a blown gasket or cracked valve cover when he looked at it. He said that I'm running on really high oil pressure.

Yeah, go buy one from a junk yard. Also, go get a radio shack or walmart soldering iron. They are cheap and work for around the house kinda stuff. If you ever start rebuilding your entire harness you will want something nicer, but for just a fix here and there they are good.

I just got the tubes were you but one wire in one side and the other wire in the other side and crimp them. Then i wrap them to hell with electrical tape(thats what I did when I installed my shiftbox) But im thinking I would have to put something else over the tape to waterproof it.

They make crimp connectors with sealant in them and heat shrink ends so you can seal them up.

What you have done so far is fine for now. If you have to mess with it again later you can solder the splice and do it right.

The seals/gasket for the rocker cover get dry out and get hard over time. Once they do the seal around the plugs to the cover can fail and leak. People over tighten the rocker cover bolts and crack the cover. They only take 2-3 ft lbs torque.

So should I just try the replace the gasket before I guy a whole new cover.. And if my plug is not connected would that cause high pressure?

Ok I was not sure if that would effect my pressure, or cause it to run high/low. Another kid told me that cause my plug is not in that the ecu is not reading the pressure and that maybe causing problems in my car (he told me high oil pressure) and that my ecu cant regulate the pressure without the plug. I dont know to much about that.

That could only be true if the oil pump were electrical. Oil pressure is determined by oil weight, bearing clearances, oil temperature and even engine rpm, but the ecu is not involved. The oil pump is mechanically driven by the crankshaft.

so other than reading the pressure it that plug serves no purpose.

It serves two purposes, to provide a oil pressure signal to the gauge cluster and frustrate DSM owners since it's always popping off the sender.

^^ this :thumb:

I got sick of mine falling off all the time so I took an insulated quick disconnect and trimmed the top of the insulation off in the middle. This allowed me to slide the connector onto the oil pressure sender, seats much firmer than the old factory connector and haven't had a problem since.

Nothing like the "OH CRAP!!" feeling when you're doing 80 on the interstate and the guage drops to zero. I replaced mine with an alligator clip. Hasn't fell off in about a year.

Going to have to do the same thing to the wire on the power steering. It falls off about once a week.

I just want to be sure that my engine wont explode with out it LOL, But would it really cause problems, as in is it worth going through the cutting and splicing.

Yes it is important. Oil pressure is the most important, and most telling gauge you can have in your car. It won't make your cars oil pressure shoot through the roof. It will tell you if you lose oil pressure though, or if it is beginning to get lower than usuall.
