Hi everyone, was really wanting to see if I can get some second opinions/ assistance on a starter engagement issue I am having. Firstly a few important notes, I have replaced both the starter and battery with new components, and will likely do the positive and negative cables just to be doubly sure of a great connection. I have also observed as much of my flywheel as possible, and the only scuffs etc that I see are the result of my issue.

Now onto the issue itself. I am currently experiencing a harsh grinding noise while starting my car. At one point in time, on the previous starter, this was not a problem. I have searched and found some decent topics but could still use more helpl. The starter grinds upon engagement, until the key/button is released. I currently have a push button start, which is wired in a quality fashion with 12 gauge wiring. I am also running a new Braille B3121 AGM battery. It turns over well, in the sense that there is no lack of power. However, this issue first arose when I noticed after this first happened, that my starter was mounted loosely. I of course tightened it up, yet the grinding was not alleviated. This is when I completely changed the starter in hopes of alleviating the issue.

I don't understand what could have changed between mounting my starter in the past, and mounting it now. In the past I never had this issue, and have run the same part number of the starter (applicable AWD manual, starter for my 96). Is there something that could have fallen from the mounting area that aids in aligning the starter? I still have my sandwich plate, and the transmission has not been out in years, so I don't see how that could be an issue?

What could have caused this issue? Any ideas to aid me solving this issue? New starter, new battery, large, quality wiring. Proper starter for my application, secured nice and snug, yet still grinding on engagement. I have refrained from turning the motor over until I can decide on a plan of action. If all else fails I will source a new trans, flywheel etc and just be done. I would like to do all I can before resorting to such drastic means.

This video displays pretty accurately what my issue sounds like : YouTube - ‪starter problem talon‬‏

Is there some kind of shim or something that has fallen off of the starter mounting plate? The sandwich plate has always been there, kind of making me wonder if I should try installing an automatic starter? Would that work on the AWD manual? It is spaced differently due to the auto's slightly larger flywheel correct?

Please guys I would really appreciate some help on this one. Its the only mechaincal issue keeping me from driving the car.
Wasn't sure if this topic best belonged in the Drivetrain forum or the Maintenance Issues forum, kind of a grey area.
