Actually, there are CARB legal parts.
Exceptions to Smog Laws, IE: if it came with a factory Intercooler, an after market one is OK to replace.
GSX's have it easier than GST's no dyno smogging for them, 95's are OBD2 exempt.

As for getting Pulled over, that's entirely up to you. the Vehicle code book, just has a few rules that get us pulled over.

No front Plate.
Too Low
Headlights too low, things hanging below the bottom of rim.
Exhaust, Keep it quiet, don't get pulled over

It's not as bad as you think, But going to extremes does draw attention, most smog techs don't even know what they're looking at.

You can get away from anything if you have the cash and know the ins & outs of California and find the smog tech that will pass anybody. It's just about the cash that you have in your pocket. That the way economics works especially in California who's over $1 billion in debt. I've gotten away FMIC, HX-52 turbo, tubular manifold, 2 wastegate dump tubes and a 4" side mount exhaust with no cat coming right out of my front fenders.

However, keep in minf JDMs cannot be too ricer. Cops hold a grudge against JDM ricer overall 1000 RWD Corvette or any other American muscle.

I heard Utah has STI's :hellyeah:

I highly doubt that unless Obama doesn't even know the basics of Economics and/or just find it that GM is unsalvageable and cut his decision losses. And even that on Vipers but they do have Chargers non-SRT8 models.

I'm so glad I live in Iowa hahahaha.... We have plenty of fast cars. For the most part the cops are fairly easy to get along with and we don't have to hide/disguise our mods!! I feel sorry for all you Cali cats for real!!

Majority of what this guy said.

Some places are worse then others. In San Jose and down south is where it's really at from rumors and propaganda seen on tv.
But it's not to much as to dsm. It's more of honda. The reason why is because it deals more with thief and popo know that majority of honda's are swapped and not bar'd. But other then that I just got home from work and a popo right behind me for half a mile. He didn't bother even with my hks exhaust.
I mean if Cali is this strict then I would say it's not as bad as others think it to be. You can say Cali just has higher standards LOL

Jeez, what a bunch of Gestapos out there. I used to go out to San Jose to visit friends and I remember all their emissions horror stories. And that was ten years ago.

And a Viper police car? I wonder how they decide who gets to drive that.

how does a state so financially strapped afford a Viper? or all the costs for the Smog Nazi's?

Exactly!! Sick & tired of having my taxed income pay for this sh#t, & public official's 6 figure incomes, & welfare, etc...... & don't even get me started on gun laws with there stupid high cap mag, evil features, bullet buttons. Sorry, didn't mean to get off topic.

Stealth:

A black intercooler looks like a radiator. Black wheels don't sparkle as they pass you. An exhaust coated with BBQ flat black disappears into the under car shadow. Flat black parts underneath your hood look so dull they must be stock.

In California, a lot of people do a lot of things to get noticed. You must do the opposite.

Good luck.

CA affords the special Pursuit cars, by seizing them during drug busts.

California is known for it's "Car Culture" it's nothing new.

There's no need to disguise mods for the Police, hell most of them are car guys too.

At LACR before it closed, on Weds grudge nights you qualified to run against the Sheriff's Dept. on Fridays, and they had a mean Olds, and a crazy civic in heads up. Lights flashing and all.

More often than not the cops have let me go, just for being polite, they're just doing thier job.

Don't want to get Jacked by the Police?
Don't be a Jerk
Don't drive like a Jerk
Don't Engage in Activities that can be considered as Street Racing/ exhibition of Speed

Smog guys, anything can get a CARB exemption, see the refs, just takes time.

PoP my hood, and it's Pretty, why hide it?

off-topic, but in where i am police can't tell if you have a cat or you're just running a straight pipe o.o

This is my engine bay:
<img src="http://www.dsmtuners.com/gallery/files/4/2/0/9/5/picture_001.jpg" alt="Engine Bay" />

That's a Greddy ic pipe set on there.
I have since switched to a 1g bov, a flat blacked injen-style intake pipe, NGK plug wires (dark blue), black conduit covering for positive wires and black nipple-caps for the Illuminas.

I'm not what you call modified but I don't want to be the guy that get's pinched for "air cleaner modification".
I'm also registered in a county that doesn't require smog.

On a serious note you can thank ricers. When cops pull you over they just think it's cosmetic and not a performance car. I remember back when you can't even get a way with different color hose in your car. Now it's so common they don't care much.
I guess if you can survive cali and ny. You can survive anywhere in the states.

I don't mind cops so much. They've always been pretty fair to me. One time I had phony plates and didn't have insurance at 2 in the morning 80 miles from home. Cop let me go, just saying "get that thing registered!" Changed my opinion and my attitude really quick.

What really gets me is the Harleys. Those things are putting out over 100 decibels sometimes and they're never hassled.

As much black as possible and recirculated BOV.

What Wes Said.

I later put on a heat sheild to cover the manifold. The only thing that caught me out one night was the blue for the filter and the SS line that had a red end on it on my drain line.

I would have went with a slightly more stealth exhaust though. Which, the new owner has done already. RRE stealth with a "Rally cat".

So not only the smog test ,but also your car must be completely stock under cali regulations?

I don't understand cali, im a southern kid...

Kinda, yes. But as long as it looks stock it's pretty much fine. I mean if you have like chrome in there cops will start to get suspicious. Theres a line between looks and performance.
Cali is not like what many think.

as long as you dont do what rice people do, you are good...

My car isn't highly modded, but I just put a full 3 inch all the way back on and it's not quiet. I used to just run around town on my bike(s) which all had full systems on them and there no really good way that I've found to be quiet on those things.

I've really been lucky - it's been over 10 years since I've gotten a ticket. I've had my good luck by not being a dumbass! Keep it cool in town and around traffic. Make sure you have a friend or relative that works at a smog shop.

It's really not that bad. Having nice weather, racetracks all around you, and even the one month a year when it rains (the natives call it winter! I'm from NY originally) makes it all worth while.
