Hey guys, after searching on the site for a few days I have not really found an answer to my question. Is it worth buying a punishment racing front mount intercooler kit for my 97 gst? My current mods are in profile. I will also be upgrading the fuel pump to either an evo 8/9 pump or a walbro 190lph. I might consider buying a 16g in the future but for now I have a 14b. Do you guys think it would be worth buying for my car?

If you plan on running stock boost ,the fmic will not really help you all that much..If you plan on running 20psi with the 14b, or 16g then yes You will notice a difference in performance..

It can make decent power but it wont make as much power as a higher end core. If you are looking to be cheap it is a good cheap core. If you are looking something better I'd go with a ETS core.

How much are you wanting to spend?

Well right now with the stock fuel system the most I will run is 14 psi, but once I do the fuel pump I plan on around 15-17 psi on the 14b. I am willing to spend around 400 and the punishment racing kit seems like a great kit for the power I would ever be looking to make.

:hmm: Really? I'd say he'd be fine with that front mount with anything up to a 20g. It seems to be a pretty good bang for your buck intercooler and a 16g should be no problem for it.

I'm pretty sure he meant that the OP would be fine with the side-mount until he upgrades to a 16g. Either way, you shouldn't need a front-mount at the boost levels you plan to run, but buying the PR kit wouldn't hurt either if you plan to run more with a higher flowing turbo in the future.

My buddy runs a 14b with a SOHC 4g64 and the PR FMIC kit. Runs great.

The fmic would be more for appearance with your current mods and you already have the hard pipes.

I would look at tuning personally.

Tuning
fuel pump+rewire
arp's (for anything over 17psi)
injectors (once you upgrade to the 16g, since 450's will just about max the 14b)
then fmic (since you should be pushing the 14b pretty hard at that point and heat soaking the smic.)

Thank you for clearing that up! LOL

Im currently running the PR FMIC/CXRACING FMIC kit too and i ran it on my 14b, s16g and now the FPevo3 16g. but ya i plan to get tuned for e85 here soon haha, but i need to do a engine rebuild first to make sure i hold power properly as well as trans rebuild and all since i want it to last me a while haha. But i love the FMIC kit it was simple to install and just dont use their BOV for sure get another one, would suggest a 1G bov but really up to you, goodluck

To be honest there will be damn near no effect on performance with stock boost levels on the little turbo, all it will do it give you more lag, so if the air does get colder... hey more power... but you also just lost a few hunudred rpms in lag so your going slower.... Unless you want to go with a nice 10in tall core or something, dont go all 18in super tall there is no benifit but the LOOKS, which everyone wants i guess, if you got $400 to spend start with hard pipes and tuning, i run stock fuel and sidemount with hard pipes and a 3in GM MAF with Translator, use a plx wideband for tuning and i ran a 13.7 with a t25 on 16psi, stock engine.

If you want looks then go for it if you want performance go with a 16g first, even with a stock intercooler you will see performance increase and then work on fuel and tuning and intercooler. just my 2 cents, i like going fast more than looking great, i eat covettes till 60 mph and well i got low end on stock evo's and sti's just from my quick ass spool and half ass tune. Top end just about everything over 300 hp eats me becuause t25= no air flow, i only am probably putting down 225hp.
