Here's the deal - we're going to be moving pretty soon and I'll trailer the GSX behind the moving truck. The problem is, I likely won't have enough time to get the car back together in time to start it and drive it up on to the trailer. I'm sure I can use a winch, but don't really want to buy one just for this one time use. I don't know that the truck rental place will rent a winch along with the rental trailer, and I don't know that the rental trailer will even accommodate a winch.

So what are my options? Are there places that rent winches?

One option is to find 2-3 buddies to help push it onto the trailer. It's free to do so, offer em a beer for their troubles if anything. That would be the cheapest option for sure. Another option is to get one of the cheap ratcheting winches, they are about 20 dollars at harbor freight. Like this one!

Might be a little "ghetto" but I used a truck and chain to pull my car up onto a trailor. Same concept as a wench with a little more force. Also comes with the risk of messing something up.

When I need to move my car a short distance, I use a Come Along

I would just go and buy $20 come-along and just keep it for next time. It'll be slow getting on the trailer, but it'll get it there for you.

Like the last guy said.

I believe I mentioned both of these options Chris LOL

I'd use a come-along. Cheap, easy to use by yourself, and heck you could get the wife using it while you push for some extra umph to help it on the trailer.

I assume this means you got good news yesterday? :)

If your trailer has a break on it just use a snatch rope and pull it on the trailer with your truck or whatever. Thats what we've always done. You probably could even get away with blocking up the wheels on the trailer if it doesnt have a break.

Come alongs do work great..It takes a bit longer to get onto the trailer..But no wench needed..I had to use a come along the last time I moved a dsm cause the wench was frozen..Wotked just fine...

Yea it will take a little longer to get on there but they are so easy to use and get the job done.

Most Uhaul trailers have a mechanical winch on them already. They only cost around $55.00 a day to rent. If you already have a trailer though, the come along method will work great without tearing anything up. Use about a 6'-8' length of chain between the tow hooks and it will pull straight with no problems...

Just to add -

If you have an Advance around, you can pick up a cheap come-along for next to nothing, use it, and take it back if needed. It's what we've had to do in the past, but then again it wasn't my vehicle so I didn't have a need to actually purchase it.

You can usually find a cheap Wrench or Come Along for cheap, just depends on how fast and how much effort you want the job done with.

Nope, we didn't get that rental. I'm just trying to figure out a plan B for the car. I'm thinking I'll do the Come Along idea at this point. Maybe buy two just in case one fails. Nice to have less pressure to get the car put back together with all the other stuff I need to get done.

I just moved my car out of storage in AZ and trailered it to my house in Vegas. I was going to use the method of a come along and several cargo straps, but we ended up having my wife just steer the car straight and me and 2 other guys just gave it a good push right up the trailer ramps. I wasn't worried about scraping since my car had the engine out of it at the time. It also wasn't even the least bit difficult to get it up the ramp, no more difficult than pushing the car by yourself on flat ground.
