I have a 99 2g GST. It is grinding into 2nd gear it will go in but grinds only if I'm in a high RPM range. 3rd only does it sometimes. All other gears are ok. Anyone have any idea what might directly cause this? My fluid dumped out on me while driving and grinded 2nd pretty hard. I found that problem and fixed it and filled and bled the clutch. Just having this grinding sound that I would like to get rid of...

Your synchro is probably going out on 2nd. What fluid did you replace it with?

2nd is one of the hardest gears for the engine to sink properly, so it's often the first to act up. Since you mentioned 3rd starting to grind, the clutch might be going.

when is the last time you did a tranny fluid change? not the clutch fluid? try draining the tranny fluid and put some fresh one in there before anything, and that may help it out a little. if it still grinds, more than likely your 2nd gear synchro is beginning to fail.

Replaced not even 3k miles ago with Royal Purple, so fluid should be good. As for the clutch and synchro? I know I have to pull the tranny either way. If so I'm going to get a new clutch and flywheel. Are the synchros part of the clutch or are they within the tranny? How hard is it to drop the tranny and rebuild it?

as with everything, the more you do it the easier it becomes. With that said, replacing synchros is not something I would not recommend trying to do yourself if time is an issue and you've never done it before. If you've got time to burn-go for it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I don't really have the time to tear it down myself. Going to call a few shops to see what kind of $$$$ I'm looking at. Thinking of puting a stage 4 clutch and flywheel too.

Also, as an option, you could probably get a rebuild Shep trans for about the same price you will pay a shop to go through and replace a syncro. A stage 1 tranny start at just under 1k. I'm having some trans trouble myself and that's the past I'm taking. Hope that helps.

I've been looking online for some rebuilt ones I have to call GOTTRANSMISSION.COM for a price. I've seen some on eBay for around $600ish. I was thinking just replacing the flywheel and clutch when I take it apart and swapping the trans is prob a weekend task for myself as opposed to taking it to someone to rebuild and would cost me an arm and a leg.

has your clutch pedal assembly worn out really bad? this will speed up the destruction of your syncros... if you can pull up on the clutch when it isn't depressed and get any significant (1/4 inch+) lift your clutch may not be fully engaging when you put your clutch foot to the floor
