I have been doing some searching today trying to see how us automatic awd guys launch, what upgrades you do, how much the upgrades cost, etc. I am not referring to the turbo, injectors, and ecu differences. I have the 14B turbo and soon plan on getting the 450cc injectors and 5speed ECU.

First off, how are you guys launching? I have a nearly stock TSi AWD so how you launch your 700hp AWD wouldn't be relevant. I don't like how my Talon comes off the line. I have tried powerbraking but nothing extreme. Just held the brake pedal in slightly while about 1/4 throttle then releasing the brake. But not enough to build any boost. Is it possible to build max boost while powerbraking?

I know there are several upgrades for the auto trans (ipt high-stall converters, etc.). What have you done and what would you advise me to do? How much did you end up spending on your trans total?

I'll tell you the set up I had, 14b turbo, auto ecu w/Jackal, stock auto trans, FMIC, 1050 FIC injs, stock motor, walbro 255, afpr, 3in exhaust, Evo 3 exhaust mani and o2 housing.
Could launch at full boost with the stock converter. It took about 10 seconds to get up on the converter which is a little long. The longer you brake boost the more heat your building the more damage your doing to your transmission. Also doing multiple break boosts one right after another is also not good for the trans. With this set-up I ran a [email protected] with a 1.7 60 foot.

Since then I've got a chipped tcu which is one of the best investment for an auto tranny you can get in my opinion. I've also got a Sinister speed 10" torque converter on order.

Hope this helps a little.
Also a little about jackal I've been using for about 3+ years and I love it. Also werewolf just came out which is jackal's big brother. Pressure based fuel and timing, 10,000 rpm maps, etc..

Great info. I never really powerbraked because I am always paranoid that I am going to mess up the trans. It is already slipping and having problems going from reverse to drive when warmed up.

I am working on getting everything I need for Jackal. It is just going to take a little time.

I have the IPT transmission and high stall converter.

I also have dsmlink v3 lite, and a td05 evo III turbo. The car builds full boost by 3600-3800 rpms.

It as taken near a year on the work but it has come along.

Don't cut corners: you will cost yourself more money and downtime in the longrun.

Rise above it my friend;)

Here it goes again. Why not and have you ever personally used Jackal? Why would you ever tune a 1g with anything else?

Well personally id never spend almost 1k for a piggy back either. Looking at a full aem set up for almost that price.

Why would you tune a 1g with anything else than jackel..Well dsmlink is the bomb..I have never used jackel..It would have to be semi free for me to use it, and It probably doesn't do half what dsmlink does..

Or does it..I'd be interested to try it out tho..

Auto cars came with trany coolers..I have never im my 4 years of owning my car ever seen the tranny temp light come on..But IPT sells an updraded cooler if your worried about tranny temps..

Getting the 5speed ecu is the cheapest way to get rid of ahorrible launches on auto ecu's..But if you wanted to which I suggest down the road if you plan on adding more power is dsmlink..You can use on an auto ecu and reset it so it thinks it's a 5speed..I just went out and got the 5spd ecu..But doen the road you bet I'm going with dsmlink..

quick question i have dsm link.... and i am wondering how do you reset the ecu so it thinks its a manual for lunch control ? i have been playing with the software and dont understand that part yet

That I do not know, But I'm damm sure you can..

But I have the list of what you need for jackel, new you save about 60 bux from dsmlink..

Socket ecu: $65
Intake air temp sensor: $25
MAP sensor: $50
Innovate WBO2: $150
Ostrich Emulator: $165
Total Cost to convert: $455 with all new components

Yea but come on man subtract 150 for the wb, because link needs that too obviously. Also subtract 65 for the socket work, because link needs that too.

Also dsmap sells 3 bar map sensor for $30 new and gm iat with plug from autopatrs runs 20 new.

Intake air temp sensor: $20
MAP sensor: $30
Ostrich Emulator: $165
Total Cost to convert: $215

So thats a total cost of 215.

Link to run speed density on full version v3 is:

v3 full $500
sd bundle from link $95
the shipping quote was $35

So i mean at bare minimum its $635 vs $215. Idk about you but $415 is alot of money to me. Thats assuming both have eprom to begin with. If not the total cost to set up link with sd would be close to $1000.

What's the sd bundle from link the cable..I thought that came with the purchase..

I looked at the thread that Chris made on the jackal setup..It doesn't appear to have as many options as link..I think I would rather go with link..Even tho the total cost is like 600$..That's what I would still prefer..And then add wideband, but still..I would rather spend the money on v3

Even tho the total cost is like 600$..That's what I would still prefer..And then add wideband, but still..

so your up to $750, then add eprom if you dont have one(200). So $950 for a piggy back, thats only 100 or so away from an aem ems...

You can tune a new evo for less... $500 for just the tuning software for a 20 year old car, thats completely ridiculous.

Damn it, i knew it would turn into another Jackal vs link bs

You could also swap in an evo 8 ecu and tune with ecoscan..

But still on a serious note..I think I would still get dsmlink..Rather than Jackal..If I had an extra 1500 sitting around I would get them both and see which one i liked better..But If I also had 600 sitting around I would buy dsmlink first...
ALso I don't think I would buy an aem ems...

I sincerely hope people aren't waiting for the overhead auto temp light to come on to see if their heating up their fluid:pray:
If your gonna be brake boosting your car, you need a tranny temp gauge..Mount it before the cooler..IPT sells the brass tee you need for the probe...:thumb:

Well it seems as if my tranny is acting up today. Went to work and when I left to come home, the car wouldn't move after driving in the parking lot, putting it in park, clocking out, then getting back into the car.

It would move about a foot every 10 seconds. At a steady, slow pace. Then finally it engaged and I was able to go. Got going down the road (driving the car manually as I always do) and it wouldn't take 2nd gear right away. Kinda seemed as if it went in neutral for a couple seconds. Then it was fine after that.

I put some Lucas Oil stuff in there. After that, it was better. Hope my trans isn't going out of it. Hopefully she was just low on fluid or something. I will have to check that tomorrow.

In regards to the dummy light on the dash for the trans, I have never seen that come on in any DSM I have owned. And it obviously doesn't refer to the temp of the fluid. But commenting on that will most likely educate somebody who didn't know.

I want to try Jackal. But there seems to be alot of work involved into setting it up. Maybe some day I will come across a descent amount of cash for Link. I don't even have a hard upper IC pipe to weld the IAT sensor into. So I have plenty of thing I would need to buy before installing Jackal.

But I like the purpose. Tuning software for $20. That is the idea and I am greatful for that.

Tuner pro is absolutly free..I don't have a link doe it anymore, but I'm sure you could search and find it..

I doen't see what jackal is all about..I again would rather just save up for link..
