So I was looking at my old gray ugly lower timing belt cover and I decided that im going to be making a stainless steel replacement cover. I figure Ill use some posts for the bolt locations and ill get some practice with my sheet metal break and my tig welder. If it starts to look like it will work ill start posting pics.

Does anyone else think doing a stainless cover is worth while or should I just put the stocker back on?
 
I say just put on a new factory one...a stainless steel one is a little too much I think

im talking about the lower cover for now. I might do a clear upper so i can check timing easier
 
Fail, I didn't even see that you said lower.
I've never seen anything other than OEM plastic lower ones.
 
Me either and I dont see the point of putting something back on that might look like crap in a year or two. Since I like to pull motors every winter for different projects.
 
so far for a new lower cover im seeing about 60 bucks for them. Only concern I have is with losing the timing mark. I might use the stock for timing then switch over to the ss one.
 
Mine is cracked at every bolt hole and broken around the edges so it doesn't seal the area very well.
 
i was thinking of doing this aswell as mine is cracked and well its just rubbish plastic. at least it it ever got rolled it would look good under there LOL not that i plan on rolling it but just a thought haha. will see what i can mock up at college over the next few weeks

I hate the lower timing covers on these car, flimsy POS.
 
I have a 4x8 sheet of stainless I bought for a different project I might mock one up with. Only problem is its kind of thin so ill have to double layer it or go buy a thicker sheet.
 
I say go for the steel cover, it's well worth it in the long run. I'm surprised I never concidered this as I work with sheet metal all the time and I no longer have my covers since the were completely torn up on mine. Great idea, let us all see when you're done.:thumb:
 
It has been started and I got side tracked with getting the car ready and building the motor. once there is decent progress ill post up pics
 
Yeah I would like to see it as well and how you solved the timing mark. I was thinking of making one as well and cutting off the timing mark and use industrial glue to glue it to the same location LOL.
 
I was thinking of making a piece out of stainless and tig welding it in place. If i use the plastic piece I would do a couple of screws from the back side to hold it in place and make sure to use a loc tite or epoxy to prevent them from coming loose.
 
Since your're going through the trouble of making a ss lower cover, you should definately try and design it to be in two halves. It would make it a lot easier to remove with the engine in the car. I've thought about making and designing my own for a while now where its 2 halves, one half would be removed from under the car and the other from under the hood. Being that its ss its not gonna flex as much as the stock plastic cover and removing it with the engine in the car is gonna be a bi***.
