I need some help with this timeing belt install I am a first timer. To start off i have replaced the balance shaft belt no problem, water pump and new tensioner pulley and idler pulley. So the problem im having is when I go to tension the belt through the tensioner pulley, the cams move out of time. So i proceed to remove tension from the belt and line everything up again crank, oil sproket etc. Then i try putting the exhaust cam off one tooth like vfaq's tells me to do, with everything lined up on the correct timing marks. So i again proceed to tension the belt with the pulley and great the cam marks line up so i tighten the bolt on the tensioner pulley, then i lossen the tool that pushes on the tensioner arm and when i loosen that the cams go off of their proper alignment. This is getting very frustrating im loosing patience here. what am i doing wrong? I keep re-doing each step over and over and i get the same results everytime. Please help me

Honestly, i didn't wanna follow along with your ONE GIANT paragraph..

I read the part where your having trouble with the cam gear.. Ether

A.) Use zip ties to hold belt onto cam gear
B.) Jay Racing Timing Belt Tools Kit [TBTS] - $50.00 : Jay Racing

These are the only way to do it.

But first, have you applied the correct amount of pressure to the tensioner? Are you able to freely move in and out the grenade pin? If so, proced to having a friend hold the cams in place with two 17mm wrenches as you use the jay racing tool or two zip ties to hold the cams in place.

After wrap the belt carefully around the idler pully, around the oil sprocket, the crank, and finally the tensioner pully. Make sure you have the belt taught we you go around the first three (idler pulley, oil, crank) so all the slack is in the front of the timing system. After, if you bought the jay racing tool set, youll have the necessary tool for tensioning the tensioner pulley. If not, you can use a screwdriver, or a pair of pliers, whatever, tension the pulley and tighten the through bolt.

Make sure everything lines up and rotate the timing belt 2 times around. Loose the tensioning bolt for the auto tensioner and let system sit for 15 minutes. If the grendae pin is still freely movable, you're good to go. If not, redo previous steps.

Obviously if the motor is still in the car, the tools you use will vary.I HIGHLY recommend purchasing the jay racing tool kit. Makes your life a LLOOOOTT easier.
