Hi everybody i'm new here and new to DSMs in general and I was wondering where I should start as far as getting a DSM. I was planning to get a GSX ,but my insurance would be off the roof considering i'm only 16. I have the money for a GSX ,but should I just go with a Eclipse GS for now at least?

a gs is not a bad car as for daily driving and gas. if you ever plan to go fast i would go with a gsx. i have both a gs and a gsx. my gs has alot done to it. and my gsx is pretty much stock. with that being said i had a buddy in the gs and i was in the gsx. we raced and the stock gsx blew the doors off the gs. if you have the money for the gsx i would go with that hands down

i would get gsx or gs-t. because once you have a turbo you never will want a car with out one. plus make sure maintance is up to date

How much do you know about these cars? How much do you know about cars? Not trying to be an ass, but I think at 16 a GS will be way better and less forgiving than a GSX. My friend bought a GS knowing nothing about DSM or cars really and he says that is the way to go hands down. Now since he has learned about cars and DSM's he is looking for a turbo'd car. He is so glad he did not get a GSX off the bat. He said he woulda tore the shit out of it and recked it. I also did the same thing when I was your age. I knew nothing about DSM's and I bought a 1gb Laser RS (4g63 N/T) and it just taught me more about these cars and taught me how to do maintenance and respect the car plat form that I love today. Good luck and let us know and post pictures of what you decide to get. :)

I would go with rs or gs. 9 times out of 10 your going to wreck your first car. My first DSM was a 93 laser n/t. I was young dumb and flipped it four times into a creek. After that I got a 96 rs, drove it for 5 years then got my GSX. You learn alot in the first few years and no one wants to see you get hurt. IMO you should start out with something that you can semi handle. Best of luck with your decision

I was in this same boat many many years ago, save your money and get a gsx (or atleast a gst) you will only get frustrated with the non turbo models and kik yourself in the a-- for not going with the turbo models to begin with. I had an RS and totally regret even putting money into it, once i bought my gsx it was a whole new ball game... good luck

Ive owned a 96 N/T like it okay. Then stepped it up to a 95 fw tsi. Then spotted the love of my life a 91 tsi(AWD Turbo) and have never been happier. Its a great daily driver and my build up. Lighter, Faster, 6 Bolt Engine..... Beautiful. :thumb:

All I got to say is your playing a rich mans game if you are upgrading your engine. I mean seriously if your going to upgrade your car and make it really fast you got to have an obsession like the rest of us. I have litterly spent 10,000 dollars in my engine in my car look up my profile if you dont believe me. In the end you will be a stud though but if you get a 4G63 engine you wont have to spend to much to get it fast and wont have to do a lot of internal( engine head and block) building like us 420a(gs) guys have to go through but either way has its advantages. with the 420a(gs) compression ratios lower were putting out more horse power per mod than the 4g63(gst and gsx). but if you get into this hobby there is a lot of work. If your going to be a stock driver and learn how to maintain your vehicle you found the right place either way.

Well people have there own opinions. Like me i have a eagle tlaon esi non turbo that i got for 1000 it was going to put a turbo in it but decided not to because i dont really like haveing turbo and have to deal with the hasel to tune it and other stuff. its what ever you want man just choose wisely on what you get and what you spend on.

dont put 420a(gs) your going to confuse the guy because the gs could have a 4g63 depending on 2g or 1g witch i dont think the guys knows yet

1990-1994 gs= 4g63 95-99= 420a <<< this is for the OP since nobody really stated that and i keep reading post that say gs is 420a with saying its a 2g

another thing to consider is that the 95-99 non turbo (rs & gs) have a chrysler motor in it the same as the 2.0L in alot of dodge cars and thus parts are more readily available at junkyards and tend to be cheaper at autoparts stores. it doesnt make up for performance but it keeps you on the road if u have to make a rerpair and dont have the funds. theres no 4g63's at my local junkyard but the 420a's are plentyful and i have alot of models to choose from cause i have a 420a. just food for thought.

when i was 16, i bought a 95 rs. i loved the hell out of it, and spent waaay to much money on it. i thought i would convert it to an rsx one day, but after all the money i poured into light engine mods the body work and completley redid the entire interior black on red.. after about 7 grand into it i found out my cylinder 3 misfired.. and i sold it... 500 dollars........................ ugh i probably could have boughten two gsx's with that... im 19 now, and got my gsx less than a month ago.... GO WITH THE GSX... my insurace is only 200 every 6 months for liabilty:D

If you have a daily driver already, get the GSX. I have the GS and have beat the crap out of it. Its a good reliable car as a DD but if you want to go fast, do yourself a favor and buy the GSX.

get the GS if its your 1st time with a 5speed
its not fast but it will teach you ALOT!! and problems are easy to find on the 420a:)
i miss mine i just sold it but i was a learning experience
