Hi everybody i'm new here and new to DSMs in general and I was wondering where I should start as far as getting a DSM. I was planning to get a GSX ,but my insurance would be off the roof considering i'm only 16. I have the money for a GSX ,but should I just go with a Eclipse GS for now at least?

If you want a gsx then get a gsx, dont settle for the gs. I bought my gs thinking the same as you are now and I regret it. After I got the gs I found out that the insurance for the gsx was only $120 more a year than the gs, so I would call your insurance company first and get some price quotes.

GS isnt a bad start. If your responsible go for the turbo but if your anything like I was at 16 stick with the gs it'll save you money in speeding tickets in ythe long run.

Have you called your insurance company and checked on how much it would be? IM 18 and mine didnt actually go up as much as I thought they would.

Have you got a quote for insurance on both models? I'd do that and compare them and go from there. My advice is get the GSX anyway. I have a '95 GS and wish I had a GSX. I just got a TSI, and now i'm parting out the GS.

Get a 1st gen GS, then change it to a turbo following the steps on this forum. You will then have a GS-T as GS insurance prices.

The gs is a great start, but it alllll depends on persoal use. Do you plan on this car being a daily driver, build it for speed, or show car? It all depends. If this is your first dsm a gs is a great way to learn about allllll the finicky and time taking stressful issues of maintaining and working on dsm's. The nt fwd models are alot easier to maintain and diagnose problems on, but if you are at all thinking about bolt on mods for speed, then a gst or gsx is what you're gonna ultimately be more happy with in the long run. The gs is really limited as to power gains with bolt ons without having major engine work. On the other hand the gs can always be converted to a gst with a lot of money, work, and research but the awd conversion to gsx is extremely difficult and most would say not worth the hassle. For a first time dsm owner id recommend the gs or nt dsm, learn everthing you can about the car, preform alllll the necessary routine maintenance on it and drive the crap out of it! Then you can make a decision on whether or not convert to turbo, or sell and buy a gst or gsx.

It depends, are you talking about a 1g GS or a 2g GS? The 1g GS was still a 4G63 and it's what I started out with first when I was your age (I still have it, only it's turbo now :hellyeah:). My love for the 4G63 would prevent me from ever considering a 2g GS and its 420A engine (no offense 2g N/T guys).

If I could go back in time 9 years ago I would have liked to have bought a GST/GSX right off the bat but at the time I didn't even know what a turbo was and it's worked out great for me. I've learned a lot (mostly the hard way) and its been a great experience. Best of luck to you on whatever route you decide. :thumb:

Yes the gs is a great start. But if it were me I would get the gsx. I got a rs when I was 16 and it wont long after I was wanting a gst or gsx. Do your self a favor and get the gsx you wont regret it... :)

get a gsx... you are going to buy a GS and end up falling in love and will never get rid of it.. THEN.. to dump loads of money building it to be just as powerful as a stock GSX... -_- Do it once and buy the GSX.. Plus AWD > 1 Wheel Drive

From personal experience I would get the GSX if its a 1g. I first bought a 1g gs because it ws a 5 spd and I needed a car. The only good thing about it was the engine and that blew a hole through a piston and the car hasn't run since and the front end parts were donated to my 94 Talon because it was cheaper to buy anbother car then put the money into the gs.

Your profile says you have a 92 lazer AWD?

Personally I was in the same situation as you at that age. I ended up getting the gs and im kinda glad that I did. It was my first manual tranny and ill admit I was pretty hard on that car. That car did teach me alot of basic mechanics and I was able to learn how to treat my car right and drive it right. Overall it was a good learning experience. Now im not sayin ull be like me but i know if I would have had a turbo car then I would have been in alot more trouble and would have most likely broken alot more things on the car as the gs is a pretty durable vehicle but thats my 02 on it.

It all falls on if you are responsible enough to drive a GSX.. not saying you aren't, but you're 16! You wonder why your insurance will be higher, because you are more likely to get in an accident in the GSX than you would in the GS!! The insurance companies know the GSX is faster and they know statistics show younger drivers are more likely to get tickets or into accidents!

If you think you can handle the need while driving the GSX and be a responsible driver, go with the GSX!
If you think you will race everyone that pulls up next to you at a stop light, go with the GS!

If its your first car and you have your heart set on a GSX then you have to go with it. If you go with the GS you'll wish you were stepping into a GSX everytime you start her up, knowing you had enough for the GSX instead.

Of course you have to be logical too, if the insurance difference is too big for you to afford then it shouldn't be a question...however the cost difference in insurance would easily be offset by if you were planning on any mods to the car.

I think you'd be just as responsible / irresponsible with whatever you drove (GSX is faster but AWD helps). Enjoy whichever you choose, Goodluck!

I would keep the gs while you learn more about these cars. It will save you money on gas and insurance for now LOL

Then when your ready you should shoot for a gsx or tsi awd.

Id say go with the GSX. my friend has a turbo'd 420A that hes dumped tons of money in and cant hang with my GST that has a 16G with supporting mods, however do your research and find what to look for in a car. i would recommend a close to stock car if you can find one. the last thing a young driver needs is a 400awhp car for their first whip, then your just asking to kill yourself.

If you get a 95-99 gsx/tsi insurance might be a little cheaper..Because it has air bags and 1g's don't..It don't really matter, any 2 door car now adays is a "sports car"..At least that's what the insurance people were telling me..

I started with a 2g gs and wasnt very happy with it. it was almost identical to my gst minus the convertible, but it was leather, same color, power everything, but super slow compared to my gst. IMO the time and money you spend on a 420a motor to make it turbo youd b better off just getting the gsx. the insurance on my gst spyder was only only 26$ more a month for full coverage through progressive.
