As most of you know, i was introduced to DSMS 4 years ago,..
I built my first 4g63, a year ago..

Well, i have my beautiful 2g now.. But; I can only take this car so far, and I am in no position to build another motor. Because of college, i have no wait a few years to do a major build.. And i plan on picking up a 1g and restoring it and building it up right.

I won't be out of college for a while, and I'm just wondering, Will this platform still be around 10 years down the road? I honestly do not plan on seeing myself getting out of this 4g63 hype..

As long as people are still wanting parts for the 4g63 cars..There should always be parts around. But they might be a little more expensive cause they wont make as many parts..Or they will be rediculously cheap..

honestly im notsure, no cars are coming up all the time. will dsms be around yup, will it be harder to find parts? sure will, i just dont know how long they will last since you can get so much more with newer cars now a days.. Now imagine whats in hold for us in the next ten years..

I dunno dude there are so many people parting out an crushing dsms nowadays that it is not looking good remember that they are not being made any more so our numbers will continue to dwindle as people continue to destroy them

As these cars age, just like any vehicle The OEM doesn't continue to support replacement parts.

IE: Drip moldings.

Unless the Aftermarket steps up in reproducing these parts, they will continue to go up in price.

Eventually Due to Diehard enthusiasts these cars will develop in to Frankenstein cars, cobbled from the remains of dead, and forgotten hulks...resulting in MadMax status.

I know exactly how you feel. My dad bought me a 98 RS for me 16th birthday and even though it was a N/T I've been crazy about DSM's ever since. I finally got a GSX when I went to college but it ended up just sitting there and now its for sale so I can pay off the rest of this years tuition. I hope that they are still around in like 5-6 years so I can finally build one.

Haha the way i look at it is the market knows we own DSM's... as in they know how often we need/want new parts. Hell the 4g63 dsm has been around 20 years now and its showing no hault. The dsm scene may not be growing in size anymore but the demand for awd platforms is still fairly high, i mean in the south people can sell a 2g gsx/tsi within 2 hours of being on craigslist ( trust me i know, i probably contacted 30 owners when trying to find mine ). Just go to google and type eclipse gsx, one of the first options is gsx for sale. I havent been around long enough to see the scene 10 years ago but for the 3 years ive been into them the market hasnt changed a bit. Were an extremely active community, were the insulin of the auto world (economically of course).

I wish i had the capability of buying a RUST FREE 1g/2g and start the next build NOW... But it's not possible.. I wanna hold onto one of the greats you know? haha i know that's everyone's dream on this site, but damn..

Maybe one day our cars will be worth a good bit of money; 20-30 years down the road if they are kept clean.

Makes you want to tear one down, sandblast it top to bottom, paint and heavy undercoat it then straight to storage LOL.

i left the dsm game.. only because i cant trust in buying a another one.. either u have to dump loads to get it running mint again or you will spend a good 5 to 8 grand on a mint one.. To me it isnt worth it anymore.. i just bought a clean mk4 5 speed 1.8t gti and im not to happy.. why? because it doesnt have the ninja, sleek, look of an 2gb i love soo much but hey.. it gets me where i need to go with a little more useable room then a dsm... but how i miss it soo much..

i honestly tell my girlfriend i feel like a grandpa..

being so low to the ground, comfortable seating position, perfect view and pull of a dsm will never leave me but i see in 6 - 10 yrs, these cars being extinct.. HELL i barely see them now..

i can seriously and i want you to try to spot a civic/vw on every city block and you will find ONE TURBO dsm maybe every other town...

To be fair, DSM'ers are cheap. When people say a DSM is expensive on this site it usually means over 5 grand, and while that may be a lot of money, when compared to other cars its dirt cheap. I'm sure popularity of DSM's will continue to decrease over time but I doubt they will die any time soon

Mine is rust free, as with most of the California, / Nevada Cars.

They might grow in worth, but if keeping worth means not using it, it kind of negates the point of owning one. They're fun to drive :D! I see them continuing on. Practically any car that had it's debut in movies stays alive. This one has a lot of backing behind it for racing as well. Only thing that can kill it off is different propulsion fuel, but that will kill any other car as well (notice it's still a 2.0, so fuel price goes up, smaller turbos can be used to work with the hikes unlike SUVs and huge muscle cars). Lastly, Mitsu is a huge company, chances are they'll stay alive in the car market.

i hear ## arguement and YES for the power to money ratio, they are good for the money.. i mean to find a dsm for 5 grand and drop some mods.. say: link, injectors, turbo, exhaust, wideband, fuel pump, afpr , MBC that alone can get you GREAT gains for the price and be faster than $15,000 cars today..

But this is where it lies whether someone needs a car or someone wants a car.. someone that needs it wont buy a dsm for 5 grand for obvious reasons LOL

i just need to daily commute so i the gti which is great.. but it isnt a dsm LOL

Do you know how many rust free cars I come across? All the dsm's I have ever owned were rust free. Shipping a car does not cost that much. I hardly ever see a rusted car down here unless it came from up north.

Yes they are getting scarce, hell we've got something like 3 in northern louisiana but also how many people these days are running out and buying 2011 ford fusions to run? Everyone still runs f body's, hondas, and dsm's cause theyre cheap speed. Theyll die off when when people stop caring enough to repair the rust just like any other legend.

Or look at the other side of the coin. For years while I was in the military I would buy a car, drive it till it broke, put it out on the farm and buy another one. Done that for 20 yrs. When the folks passed away and we sold the farm the collecters went crazy buying my 50s and 60s "junk".

In most cases the "junk" sold for more than what the car cost new.

Same way with the DSM, especially the AWD versions. Wasn't too many of them to start with. In 10 more years the enthusiasts will be paying top dollar for our cars.

have you not seen how long SBC's lasted yes there everywhere but come on.

^^ we are the enthusiasts :p

i think its really only the "enthusiasts".. i heard in another thread that STM or AMS i dont recall, cut the cord on the DSMs and no longer have a tab for us... smh

everything will be very expensive and i only see the people who own shops and high rollers that still have hope for dsms

What will most likely happen is the same thing that happened with the Fiero and any other niche car, It will eventually taper down to a hard core group that keeps it going. At least until they finally die of old age. :p

Granted some companies will pull out, but look how many companies actually take care of the newer cars, they're even more scarce.

I'll continue to say it " These are OUR muscle cars!" Come on think about it guys. Ive hung around countless old hotrodders and they all say "Only if we knew than what we know now" they would have bought every type of part they could've. They always tell me storys of how a clean camaro or chevelle even a 32' ford could be bought for dirt cheap! Or how you could go to the scrap yard and find rare parts for any type of muscle. I know we dont have the same numbers as say a chevy supersport but i think thats what makes us more rarer by the day. You younger kids(27yrs and below) are going to get out of college having great jobs with money to spend and when you look back at your youth which kind of car is going to hold a place in your heart? Not a 69"camaro or 66"mustang(nothing wrong with old muscle)but a 1g or 2g rite, so your goning to spend that good chunk of change chasing down a clean DSM!! I know that nowadays it's getting harder and harder to find a clean DSM but i think that being able to bring back a dead DSM is a LABOR OF LOVE. I say that becuase anybody who builds a DSM KNOWS it takes alot of patience and LOVE to not wanting to kill it becuase she won't start after a rebuild and it's 2a.m. on a sunday nite:)So to all those people who say that we won't have our own collector market WAKE UP!!!! Look at the prices NOW for a semi clean 2g GSX,easily five grand and up!! So don't tell me that we won't be around in ten years:)
