Hi guys, I have a problem with holding coolant. After 3 or 4 days I will have to put more coolant in. When I did a compression test, it was about 90 -85 psi for the compression test. My Local DSM Wiseman, says it may be my rings or my headgasket. I would like to know what the possibilities are and what to fix. Thanks for the help. I will check this post every day, multiple times a day. thanks again

Have you checked you radiator cap? The seal on my cap was bad, and was causing enough of a problem to lose about a gallon a day. It was causing it all to shoot into the overflow untill it was full then out onto the ground while i was driving.

BTW make sure your mechanic knows how to do a compression test, im amazed at what passes for mechanics these days..

if the rings are bad on it it should smoke. pull a the spark plugs out and if any of them smell like cooland that would mean head gasket

Haven't really read much, but if your exhaust smells sweet and/or your oil is milky then you deffinently have a bad head gasket. Now for the compression, a new head gasket may solve it, but you will most likely have to do a teardown (perfect time for eagle internals :D )

LOL if you wanna drive to St. Louis for a day trip I'd be more than happy to help you :D but in all honesty, a headgasket isn't that hard at all. Couple hours and a couple brews and you'pll be good to go :)

If your compression is 85-90 evenly across the board, I'd look to see if timing didn't jump a tooth or 3. Does the car run/idle perfect or does it sound like it's running on 3 cylinders?

And whoever the hell suggested doing a compression test with the valves closed, please explain to me how to do that one!!

get a timing light check your timing.

wow I hope this works out for you, so many people gave you good advise and asked you lots of good ? I hope you can see and use that info, if I was you I would do a leak down test first,:ohdamn:
So many people said the same thing:aha:
good luck and keep us posted.

And WTF does a timing light have to do with compression #'s?

It has to do with magic, hopes, and dreams!!! Haven't you heard that rapid flashing light may cure the need for new rings and head gaskets? ROFL

Yeah, timing DEFFINENTLY doesn't need to be considered untill you get compression numbers up :nono:

I believe the saying goes 'stupid questions get stupid answers' but random stupid answers get ridiculed and laughed at :tease:

this whole thread has me WTF

OP, you should find out exactly what is wrong with your car before you start tearing it apart. Do some research online, get a manual and take your time. Otherwise you'd be better off just paying a professional, trustworthy shop, to do the work for you.

this whole thread has me WTF

Was kind of thinking the same thing Dustin.

Yeah, timing DEFFINENTLY doesn't need to be considered untill you get compression numbers up

Unless it has jumped, in which case it could most definitely affect compression. Of course if it's jumped enough you'd have bigger questions to answer such as "what the hell is that clanking sound?" :)

*****

OP - Have you not done a simple leak-down test yet?

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/338152-compression-leak-down-testing.html

You can borrow a tester at a parts store for free (or buy a brand new one for $30), and all it takes is some compressed air and the ability to remove the spark plugs. Oh...and you have to be able to connect the air line to the tester. :)

Why do most DSM guys have to be ***holes?

What are you talking about? How was I in ANY WAY an ***hole? In fact, I believe I was one of the first posters to offer you a link that may have been helpful.

I didn't see anywhere in the thread where you did a leak down test or stated definitive proof that you have a blown head gasket. If I missed that, please point me to it. In fact, I believe in your very first post you said your "Local DSM Wiseman, says it may be my rings or my headgasket".

If you read the entire post, it's clear that I have a blown HG.

I did read the whole thread, and the only thing that is clear at all is that you don't know for sure what is wrong and are trying like hell to get someone to come hold your hand, rather than performing some simple tests to find out for sure.

Whatever dude. Good luck. :thumb:

again wow this kid is just not willing to do a leak down test :ohdamn::ohdamn::ohdamn:
and you were in no way a ***hole

Ok guys thanks for the advice. Would a leakdown test work outside? The only way I can think of doing it is t rent the tool from autozone, and use it right outside. I don't mind doing the work either, BELIEVE ME, I LOVE CARS. Especially my DSM. I bought this car in a non working condition and got it running and everything. I just cannot afford tickets or the downtime right now. Thanks for the advice and all, but I don't take kindly to people saying JUST DO IT, when I thought I was clear in stating that I cant. The head gasket and rings job means that I have to time the engine again right? That is something I don't know how to do....I love my car, respect it, and that's why I chose not to do it myself. I want it done right. Somewhere down the line, I will learn all of these things. I sincerely want to do it myself, all the other things I have done to this car I have done myself. All new brakes, tune up, new clutch installed, leaking gas line replaced, radiator replacement, fixed rear sticking brakes. You name it. Thanks all and will do leak down today. :)

That's a good idea. If I was in your situation & that was my car, that would be the first thing I would do. We tell you to do this because it will tell you so much about what is wrong with the car. If you are still unsure on how to do it, just read a little more on the forums there is plenty of good examples. This can be done in your driveway very low key. If you do not have the proper tools have your mechanic friend do it for you.

I'd be willing to help you with whatever man. I mean, rings and everything. But deffinently don't expect me to be able to help with it all in one day's time because it takes about 5 hours for me to pull a motor and 5 more to put it back in. The rebuild will take a few hours as well. And if your wanting to do rings, that's what it'll take. A head gasket would ###### take about 5 hours or so to do by it's self.

Cleaned, and closed.

O.P.- you got your diagnosis....take some initiative and get the work done or pay someone to do it for you. Don't use our tech forums as a way to solicit cheap labor- nobody is going to do a head gasket job on your car for a damn pizza.

This thread turned into a complete disaster of insults, pleads for assistance, and other shit that belongs in PM's.

Tech questions and answers ONLY in the tech forums, everyone.
