Hey everyone ive found a donor gsx for my 2g and im considering trying to do the conversion.
The cost of the parts is 600$

Anyway I realize this is a fairly involved task since I have, in fact, used the search button. But I want to hear horror stories, because at the moment my motivation is high and the price is right but Im afraid I might get myself in over my head.

Also any special tools I would need?
How long should I expect this to take me? (I would have one other person helping me)

Im fairly proficient with the dsms, so I think I have the actual skill to do the job.
It seems like lots of bolting and unbolting parts, with a slight amount of cutting, drilling, and welding. All thiings Im confident I can do

So... Any reason I shouldnt go for it?

P.S I have another car to drive (my 1g) so Im prepared for it to be under the knife for a while..

Honestly I thought about doing this to my first GST but it just wasnt worth it to me at the time all the work to do it. I would for sure do some reading and more reading before doing it.

I don't know too much about these swaps but if the gsx isn't too bad why not swap parts from your GST into the awd donor?

I rather just find an AWD car to start from. The time and expense put in is just not worth it to me. You can find a GSX online for a few grand more, but to me its worth paying a little extra.

The gsx is a no go. The strut towers are gone from the infamous 2g rust... :/

Well I just completed my swap. You will need a welder. Grinder. Drill and drill bits, and hand tools. Only issue with my swap is the fuel sending units do not work correctly. I read all the how to's I could find and while it took about 4 months to complete I only worked on it a few hrs a week. Heck my alignment was spot on and I did not try to line anything up.

I'll have all day everyday since Ill be on summer break from college. So Id hope to have this thing done in a matter of weeks. haha

How did you resolve the fuel sending unit?

I have not resolved my sending unit issue it is wired corectly I think the sending units themselves have issues interally making contact I havent had time or an empty tank on a weekend to work on fixing it. It shows E untill 3/4 of a tank then it shows correctly to about 1/4 then goes to E and some times it just bounces around and ends up on E. I think there is a internal spring that has failed and makes contact intermitently.

I rely on my odomiter and the low fuel light when it comes on I have about 80 miles left to drive. I also seem to only get just over 300 miles to a tank so I start looking to fill up just over 200. I drive 80 miles a day in it so after 200 I have to watch for my next fill up.

A friend and I did it in his garage in 2.5 weeks and neither of us had very much car knowledge at all, just tools and a few DSMTuners write-ups in hand. On top of the AWD conversion I also converted it to a M/T, which if you ask me was harder than doing the AWD conversion. I do suggest getting a shopping list together of all the parts you'll need to do it, then make sure you've got them on hand before you even jack the car up off its wheels. Read through the thread below from beginning to end, all the headaches from the swap are scattered around in there as well as the fixes.

There is NO reason not to do the swap and no reason to move all the shit from your GS-T to the GSX either. Do the AWD swap, join a group of the few that have done it, then pat yourself on the back because you know A LOT more about your car then you did before.

For those of you that say the swap isn't worth it then you've never done one, it was easy and you're just assuming it would be hard. If the price is right for the donor car then the question is, why haven't you started the conversion yet?

I did my swap when I was a relative DSM newbee and had no problem at all.

I am not fast and could only work on it on the weekends, it took me about four months. I have heard of people doing it in one weekend. It all depends on your garage and abilities. In my case the donor was a rusted POS, so I cleaned up all of the rust and threw an energy suspension kit in at the same time, so it took a lot more time. Clean up all of your parts before you start.

As far as the fuel sender issue, yes it is wired differently than the gst but follow what others have written up and you will not have any problems.

Do it man. What's the worst that could happen?

I will be doing my conversion this fall. In fact I'm picking up a transmission on this Saturday. Then all that I need are front axles, and new exhaust. Minus the exahaust I'll have spent about 1k. No way am I going to find a CLEAN 2g AWD for that price. Plus, i have an attachment to my car, mainly becuase it's clean and low mileage (72k on the body).

Some references to deffinitly talk to if you show the knowledge and wear about to do this is 99gst_racer. He is one of the profound DSMrs out there. He has a 99 gst (awd converted) with a homemade compound turbo set up. He is a great person to talk to and ask questions during your build

Well said sir. Haha.
That made me surprisingly confident and motivated. Going tonight to check out the conversion in detail and maybe, possibly buy it.

Couldn't say it any better. :thumb:

And honestly it only took me and my buddy 2 weekends. And once done, you will have a greater appreciation for the work you put into your car.
