I have a 95 Tsi AWD with 65000 miles on it and am getting ready to replace the timing belt. I have noticed that on a few of the timing belt kits pages that there are 2 types of tensioners for a 95. Late and early. What does this mean and how do I find out which one I have. I know when I had brakes put on it the shop tried 3 different pads before they got them right. It turned out it had 96 brakes on it. Can someone give me a clue as to how to find out which 95 I have .I imagine it has something to do with the vin but not sure of the cut off date. Thanks.

The '95 DSM's built between Nov 11, 1994 and Aug 2, 1995 use a the timing belt tensioner with P/N MD308587 and if it was built on or after Aug 3, 1995 then the tensioner P/N is MD308086.

That VIN you PM'd me wasn't able to be found in ASA or CAPS so there are a few ways you can figure the year out of your DSM. All DSM's trim pieces have a time clock stamped into the back of them, the easiest piece to remove is that small plastic piece behind the door handle. Pull it off and look at the month/year thats stamped on the back of it. You can also pull off your timing belt cover and look at the number stamped on the timing belt tensioner as well, its (3) digits and its the last three of the part numbers above which would either be 587 or 086.

Double check the VIN again, if you typed it up wrong I can check it again in ASA.

The VIN I pm'd you came right off the title. I checked it twice. The only thing I can think of is maybe the "O" is a zero? I know they had to put 96 pads on it when I had the brakes done. It took them 3 tries to get the right pads. Thanks again for trying.

He couldn't find it because ASA finds Mitsu VIN numbers, and most Eagle VIN numbers don't work.

PM me the VIN number and I'll try looking it up in another program I have.
Share the love Brian, whats the other program that can find Eagle platforms? I hadn't heard of ASA not being able to look up Talon VIN's before.

For the record, ASA won't find Eagle VINs usually, but CAPS will.
Yea, I tried CAPS as well. He must have a 'special' VIN, it looks like Brian was able to find it in that Chrysler parts program though.

Thanks alot.....I see you gave me a part number for the tensioner. Where did you poke the VIN in at to see when it was built? Is it someplace on the web that anyone can access? Are there more parts that are early/late specific? I have a few other things wrong that I am bound to get around to fixing sometime soon and would rather have the right part ready when the old one comes out. I just picked up a factory service manual( waiting on delivery) will they note the differences?

there are two different tensioners for our cars, sometimes there are superseded when they (mistubishi) make improvements so the VIN doesnt matter, but you have to input the VIN to even find that out... id would just order the part through JNZ... i got my belt(s) and tensioner through them not to long ago for a good price

I am going to guess that that part number is a dealer number? Where can I download that PAIS program from...or can I? I know my clutch master cylinder leaks. Replaced the slave a couple years ago. Also know that my drivers side rear tone is out and the hub is rusted in place. The dealer that I took it to to replace the tone couldnt get the hub off. Wanted to charge me an unbelievable amount to cut the axle off and replace all of it with new. After doing some research on here I see its pretty common for the hub to be stuck. The exhaust has a hole in it but I have an exhaust for it..... its turbo back without a cat. Thanks again for helping me out. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions once I start turning wrenches on it.
