replacing the waterpump on my 1997 eclipse tomorrow, does the timing belt have to come off? anything to watch out for? thanks.

After getting that all belt stuff off, flush out the block real good (take off the lower radiator hose to get the water to exit out easy) by shoving a garden hose where the pump opening is at and make sure that the mating surfaces on the block are super clean and dry - so when the gasket and pump gets mounted on first and bolts tightened down in proper sequence and torque range, you'll have no leaking issues.

I need to replace my timing belt before my EVO lll install.

Done many WP's like this with no problems .... good luck-DSM

Yep, best to do the whole timing job now. Gates sells a full kit on rock-auto for a reasonable price. I also used a Gates waterpump that was decently cheap. I recommend OEM, but if money is tight, the gates stuff works well.

My only tips on the waterpump is to go light on the RTV on both the gasket and water pipe oring gasket.

Put the engine at TDC where the cam gears line up, the crank lines up, and the oil pump lines up with the timing marks. Then take the belt off, do the wp, put it back on and tension it properly. When you take the auto tensioner out, compress it slowly with a vice until you can put the grenade pin or a small nail back throught it to keep it tensioned.
