I need some feedback on the comparison from a safcII and ceddymod. I dont have the money for a dsm link so these are my only two options. I'm new to tuning and only know the basics on tuning a safcII but know nothing about ceddymod. I have a 98 gst spyder with an evo III 16g turbo, walbro 255 fuel pump, big frountmount, aeromotive apfr at 43.5psi, fic 550cc injectors, coil-on-plugs, injen intake, apexi n1 2.5 turbo back exhaust, and an aem wideband. I've been doing research and I know for ceddymod i need a 2.0 open port tactrix cable, evoscan (which i will be ordering either way this week), and ecuflash. I'm kinda leaning towards getting ceddymod but I'm still unsure. Now for ceddymod, do I use the ecuflash to flash ceddymod onto my ecu. Does it work like this: I use ceddymod to set my settings for tuning and use ecuflash to flash them on my ecu? What are the advantages of each tuning device. I'm sorry for all the questions. I'm just kinda confused on everything here.

Your better off just going with the ceddy mods, I ran the safc when I first bought the car and it seem that no matter what I did it would sputter and misfire under boost, took care of the problem with the ceddy mod, however, I did have help from Jeff at DSM chips, but he's no longer burning any chips

Aren't all the 98/99 ecu's (black case) flashable or is it just certain model ecu's from those years.

Do the ceddy mods you'll never regret it. I've gone both ways my 97 had a similar setup as you and I used ceddy mods, the learning curve is a little steep but once you get going its really not to bad.

I used an safc back in the day on my 1st gen it gets the job done but its definitely out dated especially with all the doors ceddymods open, not just compensating for injectors.

I was told that late 97 and up had the black ecu, but only late 98 and up had the flash port. Mine does not have a flash port :(

I believe on the 98's You will need to pop the case open and check the number on the board to make sure it is flashable. If it is you can always add the flash port.

I don't follow the details that closely but I'm under the impression that all the plastic cased ECUs are flashable. If somebody has an example of otherwise I'd like to see what it looks like.

Nope they are not all flashable. You got to open the ECU up and look at the PCB code on the ecu. Theres 2 different ones. One IS flashable and one IS NOT flashable. MH7202F is the flashable PCB code.:thumb:

http://ceddy.us/h8-ecu-wiki/h8-ecus/ do some research here

Here is the info from the "First Flashed DSM ECU" thread... so no not all plastic ECU's are flashable.

ECUs:

These are DSM ECUs that are Flashable.
1998 -> 7/97-5/98 MD346675(FWD) and MD346676(AWD)
1999 -> 6/98-4/99 MD359402(FWD) and MD359403(AWD)

MH7202F is the CPU part number. Since all the ones I have are MH7202F based I'd like to see one of the others.

You'll note that ceddy's site doesn't have any examples of the ones that can't be flashed.

Plastic ECU, which is an H7 not an H8. Also had a MH7203FA chip, came out of a 98 Eclipse GSX. This was unflashable, even though the car had a flashport in it.

All DSM Plastic Case ECUs are Flashable.

The only exception that I know of are some early ACD(Active Center Differential) ecus must of been a prototype run and have a Hitachi H8/539 cpu, not the Mitsubishi variant of that cpu.

The H8 ecus(98-00 or 01) can come with the MH7202F or MH7203FA cpu.
MH7203FA are found in 2000+, most notably the Evo6 TME (Tommei Maken Edition Sp?)

MH7203FA are still flashable they just need a different definition.

DSM wise. 98-99 came with the Black Plastic Case ecus, and the MH7202F CPU, and are Flashable.

Unless someone swapped ecus or something. At least to my knowledge...

H7 is some sort of product code. Not the cpu type.

Do you have pics of the board? I'd have to see it to believe it.

For some reason tuners isnt allowing me to upload the pic. If you PM me your email address ill send you a few pics of it.

Thanks,

What I remembered was some discussion about people finding MH7203 based ECUs in the really late DSM's, back when the MH7203 wasn't supported, but the details were lacking so I wasn't sure just like I'm not sure about the claims of finding plastic cased ECU in 97 MY cars. I have personally seen the metal cased ECUs with the correct part number for a 97 and Mitsubishi doesn't usually share part numbers with something noticeably different but after all this time we still find little examples that CAPS doesn't always match what rolled off the assembly line.

My MD346676 claims to be an H1, it's just part of the inventory code like the date code on the same line. Inside was a JE331B156C MH7202F based board. I'd like to see this one along with a close up of the engraving along the top lip of the board's connector to verify the board and ECU match.
