Hey guys, I have an issue with a grinding noise coming from what sounds like my transmission.

Doesn't seem to do it once it is warmed up.

Anyways, when I start my car and it is in neutral there is a grinding / rattling sound coming from the transmission area. When I press in the clutch, the noise stops.

What could that be?

Also, a second issue I started having recently is a vibration whenever I go over 65mph. It happens all the time actually, but is really bad once I get over about 65mph. I got new control arms on both front end sides as well as axles. One axle is about a year old maybe? The other is brand new. I replaced the drivers side one recently along with spindle knuckle and tie rod end. Had the tires balanced, but not aligned. After I replaced the driver side axle is when that vibration started.

Any ideas?

Usually when you press the clutch in and the noise goes away it is an internal problem with the transmission like the input shaft bearings for example. When the clutch is pressed in the internal gears stop spinning and when you let the clutch back out everything inside starts spinning again. Make sense?

Definitely makes sense. What would be the best way to go about diagnosing it?

I would first make sure that the tranny is full of fluid and maybe even change it to see if that helps any. If it doesn't help at all I'm afraid it might have to be taken out and repaired by a reputable shop. Sometimes you just really have to tear into them to find out what's going on inside.:(

As far as the vibration goes, maybe try swapping wheels/tires from front to back to see if that changes the vibration any. Good luck:)

A vibration could be many things. Besides what was said it could also be a bent wheel that's why Gravedigger told you to swap the wheels . Sometimes the best way to check it to take it into a tire shop.

Alright. Thanks for the suggestions fellas. I will probably swap out the axles and tires and see if there is a difference.

thank you, i have a project DSM as well as my DD and this was one of the issues i was having, just thought id say a thank you for these forums solving yet another one of my many problems :) *fingers crossed* hope the noise goes away because i can shift through all five gears with out hassle so i dont beleave its a transmission problem

my tranny did the same thing.john shephard has it now soo ill know what it was soon.

I had the same problem in my talon and my old eclipse. When the clutch was pushed in the rattlin would stop. Dont listen to the worst case scenario advice people give you. I know exactly what rattle your talking about, and im willing to bet anything that its just the throwout bearing. Simple fix. Just pop the transmission off and put a new one on. But since you got your trans out i would just put another clutch in it. Rather now then later. Let me know how things go. Good luck!

my buddies f350 had the same problem it was a clutch bearing not sure the specific name though

I have the exact same problem.I pulled my tranny apart cleaned all the gears and bearings real good, and put everything back together real carefully. My clutch was okay.I greased everything up real good and put on a new throwout bearing and it still makes the same noise untill it warms up.(like a metal rattling sound)Its been doing this for three years now.If you figure this out let me know!!!
