i am going to do my exhaust and i had planned on going with a glasspack and an ebay muffler. then i read somewhere that the ebay mufflers really dont have any sound muffling capabilities. so are they just for pretty? im not talking about the catbacks, i mean just the mufflers that are like 30 bucks. no need to waste money on it if it doesnt really help considering i can get a shiny 3 in. tip for <$20. i planned on going with a 22in. long glasspack, is that going to keep it quiet enough? i dont want super loud.

Cheaper mufflers are louder and often sound bad. They cut costs by using less sound deadening materials.

I have a Dynomax muffler on my car right now. And with nothing but that and 3" piping, the thing is still pretty quite and has a nice mellow sound. I doubt a $20 muffler is going sound as nice.

there is no sound deadening material, its straight through just like a fart can

If i may suggest a glass pack you would think it would sound like i a fart can on our cars but it doesn't. or at least from the ones ive heard. i think they're pretty neat. here are some from summit just because i know they're are cheap. and here are the sounds i could find on you tube not really reliable but its give you a general idea of what it "should" sound like. hope this helps. :thumb:

I'm diggin those mud flaps :sneaky:.

And OP, if its not for function don't do it at all. Just a waste of money to prove to the world that you are in fact. RICE. If its only for looks and sound, then it is riced out in my book.. :|

Please do yourself a huge favor and get a REAL exhaust system and not a hack job like you're planning. Search the DSM vendors like Dejon Powerhouse, Punishment Racing, and ExtremePSI for high-quality exhaust systems. Either get a full cat-back or a turbo-back, do it once, and you won't have to worry about it again for a long time. My muffler shop special with my ebay exhaust (back when I first got my car a decade ago) lasted four short years before it rusted off in our wonderful Michigan weather and salty roads. My current 3" Megan Racing O2-back exhaust and Punishment O2 housing have lasted for three years and look shiny brand new.

Do it right the first time. Please don't put a glass pack or an Ebay muffler on your car. If money's an issue, then just save up and do it right when you can afford it.

id recommend doing the whole exhaust from the turbo back. i just have a megan racing 2.5 in o2 housing and a 3inch down pipe with 3 inch cat to a 3 inch straight through carbon fiber wrapped muffler. i really like the sound of a straight through muffler with the carbon fiber wrap and it looks nice too. I personally dont like glasspacks

I recommend the Thermal R&D catback. It is a good quality product for the money. And it should bolt up directly to your stock cat.

"Thermal R&D features a line of exhaust systems designed for Turbocharged vehicles. These systems are made of 3” mandrel bent stainless steel pipe and require some slight modifications to your high-flow catalytic converter. We include an extra 3” flange for an easy installation of the exhaust system. These systems are a true 3” and will not connect to a stock catalytic converter."

But Thermal R&D is the way to go IMO

In my opinion ALL exhaust sound like RICE...Get a 3" turbo back down pipe, and a 3" electric cutout right before the cat. That way when you're racing you can open the cutout. And when you are driving home at 3am you're not annoying the shit out of everyone on the block with your fart cannon. Not to mention it's fun as hell to go from super loud pipes/ then back to stock pipes with the flip of a switch. :hellyeah:

I've heard plenty of various 3" turbo exhausts that sound great...and I've also heard plenty that sound like shit. IMO, cutouts sound terrible. I've never personally had a 'fart cannon' exhaust setup that was so loud it would cause the cops to be called on me, I had a SRT4 with a straight 3" all the way back, no mufflers to an ebay 3" muffler (60$) and it sounded great/unique...not even that loud really. It all depends on how you go about it I guess.

I have one sitting in my living room right now. The beginning of it flares down to meet up with a stock downpipe. It's a straight bolt on. They mention "high flow" as in 3" cat most likely, and yes it would have to be modified to fit that, as the little flared down section would have to be cut off and re-welded with a 3" flange.

If you're worried about it, just get the thermal and a 3" downpipe that flares down to stock size at the flange to meet up with a stock cat-back, and then just have it modified when you can down the road. Considering my car is stock as can be right now, theres gonna be no ill effects of this. By the time I'll need it widened up to flow more, I'll have the money. :thumb:

Oh I have had them all, and they all are annoying as shit... In fact the guy down the street has one of those Neon srt things...and it sounds like me taking shits after a hard core chipolte session I laugh every time he farts past my house haha...he annoys the shit out of me and wakes our baby up all the time. A cutout may sound like shit while cruising, however I don't open it while cruising on the roads, I'm not trying to impress people with my Ricerness and how loud my lil 4 banger is. I only open it if I'm at the track. At WOT a cutout sounds like sheps car or something like that with an open DP. In my opinion there is nothing cooler than a nice Quiet riding DSM that doesn't annoy everyone in your city, and make people hate us as a collective whole.

I guess I can see your point of view. Then again where I come from, it's nothing but Hondas with lopped off stock exhausts and whatever fart cans they can get weleded/clamped/etc on, so a srt/dsm/evo/subi sounds 100x better when you hear them. All personal preference I guess!:rocks:
