I just took out the intake duct that's fender to air-filter. The thing is made wrong! There is a triangular cut out in the fender for the duct but the duct doesn't route there. instead it sits flush against the body panel. How in the world does air get thru!!!! More unbelievably, it runs smooth.WTF

How many of you guys know about this? or is my car unique?

Could you post a picture to clear this up a little?

I didn't notice anything peculiar when I removed my factory intake duct. I would like to see a photo.

Look and be Amazed!

This is the triangular hole in fender where air intake duct should route to.

This is where it actually routes to: It misses the hole and is press flush against the fender wall.

I went to a pick-a-parts to get a new duct. The eclipse(97~99) that was at the yard had the SAME problem. I can't believe they let cars off the assembly line with such an easy to identify defect. Didn't a single worker notice the problem and report it?:ohdamn:

I had plastic covers on mine. I have those holes on both sides. I ran part of my wire harness through it though.
That is the hole in the corner next to the head light correct?

Yes.
where is yours ducted?

@Juanpa
No way to twist it. The duct is about 12 inches long and 4 in diameter. Take a look at your car and tell me what you see.

Those 'triangular' holes are for access to the blinker bulbs. my driver side has a plastic cover to too keep dirt and dust from flying around the fuse box. The intake box barely has any air flow through it at all, a cold air intake is definitely a step up.

our stock intakes do not sit in the fender. they are not cold airs. they sit in that box just behind the headlight with the hole. if you switch to a cold air it then routes lower than the exising hole and goes in a hole that sets the cold air down infront of the front bumper.

i just realized after posting 96rsSTBRWD def brought this thing back from the dead....

This thread has revealed we have 2 types of Eclipse drivers:

1) the High performance guy that replaced his stock intake without inspecting where the system routes air from.

2) the non performance guy who never really inspected the intake system.

I've been to the pick-a-parts several time since my first post. EVERY 2G has its pre-airfilter intake manifold mostly blocked off this way. I am surprised that not a single person knows about it( not wanting to help about it).WTF

How does the engine run? On closer examination of my pictures, The top half of the air duct has a small gap to let in air while the lower portion sits flush to the body. This gap and any other loose fit that lets air in is how a stock 2G takes in air.

Here is an overall view that shows the hole.

I'm planning on disconnecting this duct to test if it runs better that way.

Take a photo more than 3" away from what you're talking about, it would probably be more useful. I'll go look at my N/T's ducting but I don't remember it being setup like you're explaining, but I'll check.

Why are you bumping a year old thread?

:dsm:

This is correct. That duct is not meant to go there.

Here's a better pic Corey.

See open hole in body for air to pass through here.

^ Glad you posted up a pic of that, I was digging through mine. When I crunched a fender a while back on my Spyder GS I realized where the intake truly ends.

Like stated, the hole your seeing isn't for the air intake, the intake has a weird snorkel thats riveted to the air box and draws air in from behind the fender. It is a very restrictive design which is why most people go for the open element filters.
