im doing a motor swap in my project car and im gonna use the 8v 4g64 motor i got out of a 92 dodge d50 pickup 2wd.
I know on the newer 4g64 motors you can bolt on the turbo manifold and all that from the 4g63 turbo motor. My question is since you can do that to the newer engines can i do it mine as well? I mean they are both a 2.4L 4g64 motor. main diff is newer one is a 16v and mine is a 8v and mine is rwd vs fwd. but that shouldnt matter really. i know of the 4g63 head swap and im not for sure if i wana go that route yet. i want to atleast get the g64 in and have all the turbo parts.
My other question is i was told you could use the pt cruiser turbo pistons in the motor? but that is a 16v also. any 8v turbo pistons i can use or is the only option is aftermarket?

thanks for your help guys.

This motor is going in your 93 all wheel? You are going to most definitely want to put a 63 head on it. In fact it's just not going to work properly for a DSM if it doesn't have a 63 head on it. There are wide and narrow block 4G64s, you need a narrow block to bolt up to a DSM transmission. I don't know for sure but I would think since the motor you have came out of a 90-92 vehicle that it would be a narrow block design. I know that most of the D50s had a narrow block. You can check to see which you have by measuring between the two lower bolt holes where the transmission would bolt to the block, the measurements are 13.25" for the wideblock and 12.25" for the narrowblock.

No the 93 is still doing good. The motor is actually going into a starion that has a bad motor. Thought since it needs a new motor why not upgrade. Yea I've been reading a lot and couldn't find what I wanted to know. Yea there is a wide and narrow block. From the site I found it said the motor I got is a wide block and it is. The mighty max truck came with the narrow block. But could be wrong.
Yea later I mite switch over the head. Just a lot of stuff to add, switch, etc to get to work. I would like to get the motor in it and see what I can do with it performance wise first.
Thanks for the reply

Have you looked at :: Project Zero G ::

I'm not 100% certain, but a friend of mine that works at a machine shop told me the 4g63 head will bolt directly on the 4g64, but you have to have a machine shop block a few oil passages. That might be something you want to check on.

Why not just measure it? Then you'll know for sure. I gave you the measurements. And why even mess with the 8 valve head thats on there now? Get ahold of a 63 head and just go straight to something that you know will work well.

Yea its a wide block motor and it'll bolt right to my tranny. I have read over the projectzerog and there is a lot of great info on it. The reason I kinda want to stick with the sohc motor is ### of the underdog factor and I wouldn't have to fill oil passages or mess with the timing parts to get that all figured out. I'm not ruling it out by any means ### it still mite happen. Just trying to see my budget for build. I know I can use 1st gen big turbo rods with stock crank. I would just need pistons and I'm hopeing the 4g63 turbo manifold bolts on.
It bolts to the old sohc 4g63 that came in the Aussie starion that came with the 2.0l motor. The 1st or 2nd gen head should bolt on with some mods to it.

You don't need to fill oil passages or anything like that to make the 64 block work with a 63 head. A 4G64 is literally the same as a 63, only difference is they raised the deck of the 64 by 6 mm to accommodate for the extra 12 mm of stroke.

That's not true. There ARE more passages on the 4G64 and you can block them with simple freeze plugs.

Thanks for the info. I didn't get a straight answer from that. Couldn't you swap the head and get the pistons also and that should take care of the comp ratio right? I don't rely get the whole cc thing for the head. Both a sohc. One has 8v and the other has 16v. Just smaller valves.
Other question is everything that bolts to the newer motor will it bolt to the older one?? Like turbo manifold and all that.

I am interested in putting a 4g63 head with turbo on the 4g64 in my mighty Max. Would I be able to puts the head on my block without changing the pistons? Or will I have to put lower compression pistons in? I want to keep it as close to a stock Turbo motor as possible until I get it running then work the bugs out and worry about mods later. Other than the intake manifold, the intercooler piping, and the wiring harness, what should I expect to modify?
Don't mean to hijack this thread. I figured some of my questions could also help others looking at this thread.

well from what i read in forums and othe sites on the net is that your suspost to use oversized turbo pistons size the g64 has a larger bore. then you can use the dsm rods and they are suspost to work on the stock crank. ppl have said the g64 and g63 2nd gen rods are the same. Im not 100% on that though. mite want to check. I know the 1st gen has stronger rods vs the 2nd gen.
Check out projectzerog.com and starquestclub.com alot of great info.

Other then the things you said you mite have to do alittle work on the fuel lines and power steering lines also. o motor mounts are the big thing

I've been doing a lot of reading about this but cant seem to find some info. All of my accessories are bolted to my block so I was hoping to leave them where they are. And as far as my question about the pistons goes, does anyone know what the compression would be if I put the 63 head on my 64 block without changing the pistons?

Ok I read somewhere I can't remember. Maybe on stares forums...
But with the stock 8v pistons with the 16v head would make it high compression like 10-1 or 11-1. I mite be wrong.

Hmmm.. Thats a little high for a turbo. Guess I would have to change the piston at least.

So say I put the low comp. pistons in and bolted the g63 head to my g64 block and kept everything as close to stock as possible. Would I be able to get it running with the stock tune in the ECU from the donor vehicle or would I need to get DSMlink?

Thanks,
Nick

im not 100% on that one. every where i read said you should be able to run the stock pcm from the turbo car. But alot of people said that you would have to switch over to a ems.
