What is in reach? The hood will not close correctly with that in your car. Take some measurements and calculate the surface area of that thing. Yes it has huge frontal area but it is what 1.25" thick? This is why most intercoolers on our cars are 2.5" to 4" thick. Smaller frontal area but same or maybe even more surface area.

The core is 2.5" I wouldn't be using this if it was less thermally efficient than something that fits stock. :D Where's the fun in that?

So it probably does have more surface area than MOST other intercoolers. I bet my 4" GReddy core had close to the same surface area though. Other than WOW factor using this on your car is just not a wise venture.

I agree. The "wow" factor being "wow, look at this idiot with a big rig intercooler on his 4 cylinder". People running 9s and 10s surfice with a normal 3" core, i dont get it..

For real. Your not really putting that on your car are you?

Of course I'm serious. You guys are brutal. I have an AEM meth injection system as well. 9:1 at 50psi needs meth no matter what the charge temp may be. I'd prefer a low charge temp so I can use less meth.

 All the cool kids will appreciate the farce.

People have ran close to the 40psi on pump gas with 11.5:1 CR. I can't tell you who has but he made 650whp on pump. There is more to it than turning the boost up and thinking your Jesus and will make 600+ HP.

I know of another car that ran 50 psi and didn't even have an intercooler. The owner's name was John Shepherd. He didn't just use meth to cool the intake charge, he burned it and ran 7's.

Word. I wasnt gonna pull the shep card...but your right.
Im all about originality with things, but this is just ridiculous...and BEGGING for a mockery on other car forums..LOL.

A working VGT turbo with custom controller is a cool idea and if you can make it happen it will be awesome, hopefully you have a great background in control systems engineering because the feedback engineering makes my head hurt just thinking about it! As for the intercooler, Im with everyone else, even if you do fit the intercooler on the car, you are taking the cooling efficiency thing a bit far. I would think there is a much better method of cooling your charge air then using an intercooler that stands as tall as your car when standing on end. A super thick core would be a much more effective option I would think. Hell you might even be able to do what the 3000gt guys are doing and get a couple super efficient cores welded together like they do with our stockers. Couple it with meth and some e85 and you should be good to go, but this massive intercooler thing is way to far left field. Im keeping tabs regardless!

I'm not sure what all the contention is about. I am using a big intercooler because it makes the cycle more efficient and I find it amusing.

Thanks for the constructive feedback... I looked into doing a multiple core setup and found that for the price of fabrication and the cores, this was much less expensive. It's ridiculous but that's half the fun. My car is already a freak show and I really don't care what people think.

The control loop is an interesting one. There are time delays involved in the feedback because air is compressible. Time delay can cause really bizarre instabilities in systems. Once I have the VTG installed I'll be able to collect information.

40psi at 11.5 CR on pump gas is fairly incredible. I'd be interested in finding out about the parameters this person was running.

Well... I've got to hand it to you guys. My wife says this intercooler looks too ridiculous. She wants to race the car also (that will be another thread altogether :shhh: ) and she's not too keen on "the radiator mobile".

Just when I thought I had heat transfer by the balls.

Now I have to find a truck to use to this thing... or maybe a snow cat!

Why stop at 50psi? Why not shoot for 190psi? Its just a number, easy enough to type in, just do it.

Well duh, 190psi is outside the compressor maps for the HE351VE. If you injected kerosene and hydrogen peroxide into the exhaust manifold and created an afterburner, one could shoot for 190psi, assuming the burst speed of the turbo wasn't exceeded or the blades didn't disintegrate from cavitation. At that point, why not burn the kerosene and peroxide as a rocket and get rid of the piston engine altogether. Piston engines are inefficient, maybe I'll just build a rocket instead. :p

Tell your wife to get her own car, I wanna see that thing with a bumper on it and the hood closed....LOL

no matter how much wow factor you wanted an intercooler that size is absolutely ####ing ridiculous on a car.

thank the car gods for your wife.

Dude. Everyone who's got something negative to say on this thread really should've just moved along. I think this is absolutely awesome, regardless of how functional it is or crazy it looks. Let the guy mod his car and quit getting your panties in a bunch because you're jealous he has a cooler car than yours.

Good work OP. This is more ambitious than 90% of people on here would even consider attempting. You sir, are a real dsmtuner in my mind. Don't let these guys or your wife stop you from doing what you want with your time, money and car.

Well said :applause: Too many threads these days get instant "that's stupid, do what 99% of other people do" responses, which is annoying and makes me want to stop reading threads. I was hoping to see this project completed for no other reason than "just because" I haven't seen it done before. I really didn't care if it was more functional or not.

ROFL So according to you, we shouldnt give feedback? He made a thread asking for feedback...LOL. "regardless of how functional or crazy it looks" is a hilarious statement. hahahahahah Thanks for the insight!
Just doing something to do it, without a benefit is the definition of stupidity. Why throw time and money into a "project" that yields no real results? Just to say you did it? If you have that much time on your hands, you need a better hobby. Im all about fabrication and one off projects, but only if they serve some purpose weather it be functionality or appearance. This is just ridiculous. You guys crack me up!!

He's obviously doing it to 1. Prove he can, 2. Learn something new, or 3. Just because this is his hobby. Not everyone is driven by time and money. You might only "waste" your time if you see an immediate benefit for you, but this guy might just be doing it for s***s and giggles. Lighten up. It's not your time or money he's spending.

And feedback can also be construed as constructive criticism. Not just bashing on him or calling it stupid.
