Finally, a good quiet muffler

I just talked to Chris, at MAP about the group buy going on over on EvoM.net. Apparently, he is trying to get the order placed within the next couple of days. From the sounds of it, they were able to get a pretty sweet deal on only 5 units, so I'm sure that if we could get a group buy with about 10 or so, they might hit the average dsmers price point a little better. I want one, I just can't get in on this group buy. :cry:

very nice! I love the stock look way sexier than just an old fart can IMO. Now time to go trick some cops. :thumb:

:thumb: ^ +1

I want one of these exahusts so bad. I live in cali and the cops blow out here

A group buy would be nice. I'm already at $700 shipped, plus the extra ill have to pay to get it put on since its not a bolt on.

$700? Jesus. Well Chris said they got their price down between $430ish-490, which includes the international shipping as well as the state side shipping to get it to your door. The price varies between exactly which muffler you want. I think as this becomes a little more popular with the dsm crowd, we could definitely organize a group buy, but 2-3 days notice to drop close to $500 is a little tough to do, especially in our community. I say, give it a little while so that the the guys who will miss out on the EvoM.net group buy can join in.

Very true on the 2-3 day advanced notice on them. Still does not stop me from drooling over the product LOL. I know I would be interested in another bigger group buy of these. Hint hint over at map LOL.

As mentioned above I'm trying to get this underway today, I've currently got 7 orders. Pricing is $439.99 for most options and $486.99 for a few others, that includes inbound shipping, customs clearance, and outbound shipping to your door. I know its short notice, but if you're interested give me a call ASAP!

Additionally, we will have to order these in bulk in the future, another group buy works for me but pricing won't be able to improve much if any from where its at this time around.

Good to know. Thanks Chris. You should definitely post up some videos of your Evo once you get them in. :sneaky:

I am looking into Getting a new exhaust system for my 96 awd tsi And I really like this Exhaust Muffler. My engine is pretty much stock so I am wondering if this Investment would be beneficial or not. I would want to get a wider exhaust all the way up to I suppose. Also does the back pressure When it is closed affect the lbs of boost you can have when driving around with the butterfly valve closed? thanks.

That's one helluva deal. Had i known you were doing this I would have contacted you first.

Considering you are stock, I would assume having this muffler with the flap closed would be just as equal, if not better, than the stock muffler. Having it open should be less restrictive and something good should come out of that.

How about this idea. Take this muffler Magnaflow 5x11 Oval SS Muffler 3" 3" 12599 Dual-Dual - eBay (item 310203893954 end time Mar-25-11 18:51:20 PDT)

Hook up one of your "inlets" to your factory exhaust and weld the other one shut. It would give you twin 3" outlets on that specific muffler. Would that give you the effect of two mufflers? Or, what if you had a 2nd 3" pipe that went from the front of muff to the other side of car (assuming there was room).

Or what if you took a 3" single inlet and a dual outlet but blocked off one of the outlets, that would be very similar to the dual muffler idea.

or a 3" in dual 2.5 out and a cutout on one of the 2.5 outs that goes strait to atmosphere and the other 2.5 to some sort of resonated tip?

I dunno, just seems like a lot of dough, I LOVE the idea tho and if I didn't drive a 1991 car I would probably not mind because it would be only equal to a single monthly payment on a Evo.

Yes; when the valve is closed, I can't build much more than 3psi at WOT. It has enough power to get by, but by no means is quick by any stretch of the imagination.

Sorry guys, I tried linking to a math equation that relates to muffler inlet/outlet size, but the link is currently down. As soon as it does become available I'll just re-paste the post here. Basically, if you have a 3 inch exhaust, you can use smaller diameter dual tips (all the way down to 2.25 inch tips) without sacrificing power/performance.

So at WOT the most you can build is 3psi? Oh man, then it's really restrictive when closed.

Oh hey, where did you run the wires to the motor? I was looking at where the spare tire is and saw two rubber like caps on the floor.

so why not drill a few holes in the butterfly valve till the right amount of restrictive-ness is achieved? not sure if this would work but..

Yea it is restrictive...but when I'm just crusing it doesn't matter to me. I'd rather have it quiet.

There was a small hole above the muffler area that I put a rubber grommet into and fed wires through. I cut off the 12v plug and just ran the pos & grnd wires to a keyed source.

Alright, il probably do the same with the wiring, thanks!

I just got it, thought it was going to take weeks to get here all the way from Australia but no, 5 days and it's at my door!

Now to figure out what muffler shop will do the job right, Midas? Hmmm...

Alrighty, here we go. This post was from the thread below:

What's the math behind finding out the smallest dual tip diameter available from a single 3 inch pipe (so as to not create a bottleneck at the end of the exhaust system)?

The short answer would be that the area of the two outlet circles should be greater than or equal to the area of the single inlet circle. But in reality, you probably want the outlets larger than that.

Ai = pi*Ri^2 (Ai, Ri are inlet area and radius)

Ao =2*pi*Ro^2 (two outlets)
Ai = Ao
Ri^2=2*Ro^2 (the pi cancels from both sides)

for a 3" inlet:
9=2*Ro^2
4.5=Ro^2
Ro=2.12"

So for a 3" inlet, two 2.12" outlets would have the same area.

I've seen 3" inlet mufflers with dual 2.25, 2.5, and 3" outlets. But many mufflers have even smaller internal tube diameters than the inlet or outlet. Not all of the vendors advertise these sizes, but you might get an answer if you ask them. And then you have the fact that the pipe is perforated, going around turns, etc., so exhaust will flow through the perforation into the shell, passing through additional bends (act as restrictions), etc. So all I can do is give the simple answer and consider mufflers that others have used and like.

I vote mom and pop shop for that one.
Midas won't even let me choose my own alignment settings, even if they're within spec.

This really depends on the shop and how you get along with them... I'm not a fan of places like Midas but I took a chance and was very pleased. I had a very specific dual tip design I wanted and could not find one off the shelf that would work... basically I was trying to simulate the look of the OEM muffler but on my Borla. The basic dual tip wasn't anything special, 2x 2.5" pipes coming out at an angle with staggered lengths and slashcut ends... well maybe it was special. The real problem for me was space and the only solution was to fab one from scratch. They did this for only 1hr labor.

At the same time I had them cut off my cat, which on this particular car comes welded to the downpipe, and flange it so it could be easily removed and replaced with a test pipe, which they also made for me.

I've also had good luck at the Goodyear dealer on custom alignments... I asked for 1.7 degrees neg camber and some amount of toe in front (I can't remember how much right now) and they did it even though the book sez +/-1 degree max and 0" toe.

Be cool with them and they will often be cool with you. In the case of the muffler work I signed a note saying it was for off road use only. This covers the shops ass if anything happened down the road... I didn't have a problem with that.

I don't know if any of you have seen this, but the Air Force teamed up with Galpin Auto Sports to build up a dodge challenger a few years ago. The exhaust has a y-gate that can re-route the exhaust through two channels, to open and close "stealth" mode. I always thought this was a neat concept and something I might want to look into further down the road.

You can look up the videos for their builds on youtube.

The only thing I saw was at 1:23 in Part 3, which is just a dump valve:

Definitely want one of these really bad. Price is what's keeping me from getting one. But will be bookmarking this and keeping a very close eye on it.
