yea. no smog test either, does you inspector drive you car into the garage, they are suppose to but mine new has. I live in the country I guess you can say. Some people take there car to one place fail inspection and go to another place the same day and pass. They dont even put rejection stickers on our cars here.

For you guys that have tho have the car inspected every year, it ###### isnt a good idea. I reset mine back to zero when I put in my new motor. In illinois it isnt illegal if the car is over ten years old or the title says it hs over 100,000 miles on it. After the 100,000 mile mark it "exceeds mechanical limits", so your really free to do what you want. I dont have to worry about inspection every year, lucky for me. I think my odometer reads like 2678. LOL

In wisconsin, I didnt have emissions testing and I would rather get hit by a bus than take my car in for service so I rolled back my odo when I put my 6 bolt in so I could keep track of how many miles I put on it. I did however write down the original milage and kept it in the car so I could give actual milage when I sold it. But it shouldnt matter anyway, a car over 10 years old doesnt need to have exact milage on the title. It just says exempt.

Actually, it is not illegal at all. It is simple law understanding.
You can roll back the odometer, but must right down the actual miles, and have that document notarized and signed by a witness who seen you right down the actual miles. And then, you can roll it back to wherever. You then have the rolled miles notorized, and signed. You then just go from there to see actual miles. Every time it is rolled back, you have to do this. I have heard this to be true. NOW, if you go and try and use your rolled back miles to get a potential buyer to beleive you, this is misrepresentation, as well as fraud, you could be sued.
On a side note, I have helped do this with another car. It was a PITA, there were locks on each of the numbers, one lock would move, and you could roll the gear, and the would come off 20 miles at a time haha.

I've found my odometer to be off by 1/20th of a mile. Over the life of the car (208k) that adds up (10.4k) kinda sucks. I'm now at the point where I'm just going to let the miles keep rolling. I mean, seriously, how many people these days drive a car with over 200,000 miles on it?

I should hope I won't be in any violation of law. I am restoring everything mechanically in my Talon, all seal, bearing, engine rebuilt, tranny rebuilt, wire tuck, steering column, steering rack, I mean everything. I want my odometer rolled back to zero because I feel at that point the car is like NEW. I'm getting classic tags and show car insurance so the insurance company doesn't care about the odometer. Its insured at a dollar amount. But I'm only allowed to drive the car on weekends and to/from car shows. Also I'm limited to 3000 miles a year.

Anyway I see guys who restore old Camaro's put custom gauge clusters in that have new odometers. Wouldn't this bee the same thing?

To be in compliance with Federal law, you need to have a certified notice of the mileage on the car before the odometer was replaced. Check with you local state troopers, they should be able to tell you how if they aren't the ones in charge of this in your area.

Just for anyone who searches this thread at a later date.... I live in Ohio and my car was sold to me with a marking on the title as not actual mileage. This also appeard on the carfax. My cluster reads 7k because that's when the motor was redone. I asked about the legality of the previous owner doing this mod at the local DMV when transferring the title. I was told that as long as it's marked on the title of the car itself that the mileage is not actual it does not matter what the cluster says. So there you go... if you really want to do this legally... goto the dmv and have them make the designation on the title. Then you can play with the odometer all you want and be able to sleep at night.

BUMP:

Anyone roll back a 2g cluster? I found a white face gauge that i want but it has 201 on the odo and i have only 60. Anyone that can help please post.

I would like to know how to roll the odometer forward.. The cluster has 45k on it but my car has 73k. I just want it to read what it really is instead of always having to add it together. Plus if I ever sell, I just want it to say the correct mileage.

When I bought my car it had over 200k miles on it but the cluster had already been swapped at least once and read like 75k or so. Since the mileage was already wrong I didn't see a problem in setting it to 0 just to keep track how many miles I have on my built motor. Besides, after I'm done with this shell I doubt someone else is gonna buy it. It has nothing but the essentials pretty much so it will probably end up in the junkyard.

Are people afraid to say how to do this? People just say that they have but no one has actually come out and said how to. I am looking to roll mine FORWARD so I'm not looking to rip people off. If someone doesn't want to tell everyone but knows how to, you can PM me and I wont tell a soul!!! ROFL

why cant u just take off the clear plastic covering the gauge cluster, and use your finger to "roll" the mileage to whatever you want it to be.

if it'll go faster, get a dremal with a soft rubber attachment to act as a wheel for the rolling

haha that probably wont work but it should would be funny if it did.

I tried that and they are locked into place so people can't just roll them back on any car. I didn't try to force it too much since I didn't want to break it but I know there is a way to do it without having to force the numbers.

You gotta take the speedometer gauge out and remove the odometer from it and screw around with the little pieces in it. It takes some patience, there are a lot of small parts.

I can't believe this thread is still alive ... anyways the car is no longer a street car and mileage doesn't matter anymore since I eliminated the stock cluster altogether but I did take the stock cluster and try to roll it ... all you have to do is physically roll the numbers to where you want them and it works ... just remove it from the car, pop open the plastic cover and thats it, nothing else comes apart. Everything still worked after doing this as well.

Exactly. Just roll the numbers back.
